MVMS Veterans Day Breakfast - Serving Those Who Served Us
There were several heartfelt stories that were brought to my attention on Tuesday. Many of which came from veterans of the Vietnam war that spoke of how poorly they were treated when they returned home. One of those veterans was our very own Mr. Doup. He talked about his own experience upon returning home and it was not a hero's welcome. However, On Tuesday, he said he felt celebrated like he had never been before. He told me that it was amazing to him to see the older veterans in wheelchairs smile and that the whole program was amazing, but the clap out at the end is what brought him to tears.
I cannot fully express the gratitude of the many that were in attendance, so below are just a few of the messages that I received from our community.
"You all did a good thing yesterday! I have heard nothing but praise for the breakfast you held.
My dad attended and texted me right after saying how wonderful it was and how much he enjoyed it. Lois Hanson at Paragraphs bookstore told me that several people were in her store yesterday and they all raved about the event. She said there were several comments about how they liked the "clap-out". ~ Christine Homan, Maintenance Director Secretary
"Thank you for hosting the Veteran's Breakfast at the Mount Vernon Middle School this morning. The breakfast far exceeded our expectations. All of the students and school staff did a great job in helping to host this special event. Everything was so well-planned and seemed perfect to us.
We were impressed by the student presentations and all of the hard work which resulted in a well organized and meaningful event. Getting middle school students involved in a breakfast designed to honor veterans was a great idea! We left this event feeling positive and more hopeful for a better future. May God bless you, the staff and students." ~ Daryl (Army 1968-71) and Lena Gruver
