Vocabulary
7-Steps vocabulary
1. Say the word 3 times (The POWER of 3)
2. Use the word in a sentence
3. Give a dictionary definition
4. Give a student-friendly definition
5. Highlight important parts of the word
6. Use the word in a think-pair-share
7. Summarize the word

ELLevation Strategy Spot Light
360° Words - Move It! Make It! Mean It!
Help EL students develop academic and content vocabulary by utilizing this strategy.Learning Targets
Students will:
- Engage in explicit vocabulary learning
- Identify a sentence, connection, kinesthetic movement, associated visuals, and definition connected to new vocabulary
Before Activity
- Select 1-3 essential vocabulary words within the context of the lesson for deep instruction.
- Prepare a 360° Word graphic organizer for each student to have one for every word.
During Activity
- Show and read all of the words. Encourage students to share any previous knowledge of the words. Ask, “What do you notice or know about these words?”
- Model Move It! Show the word in context and provide a general definition or description. Start by using a call and response repetition and as a group, find a movement or gesture to represent each term.
- Model Make It! Show a visual that connects, defines, or explains the term. Repeat the Move It! gesture as you deepen understanding.
- Students Make It! Students jot down their own definitions in the meaning portion of the graphic organizer.
- Work together to Mean It! Brainstorm words or ideas that connect to the term as well as words that contrast with it.
- Close the lesson by posting vocabulary for reference in future lessons. Move on to the content lesson, being careful to highlight where the new vocabulary terms are used.
