February Newsletter
D.W. Daniel High School
Our Vision
Students at DWD will graduate with a wide array of skills and strong knowledge base in a culture of high expectations, generosity, encouragement, and civility.
A Message from Our Principal: Josh Young
At the end of February, we will begin our course selection process for the 2018-19 school year. We will meet with our students during class assemblies on February 28th to discuss available courses and to remind them about specific graduation and college entrance requirements.
A representative from the Pickens County Career and Technology Center has already visited our students and shared information about their available course options. We have also scheduled dates in late February/early March for teachers to advise students on the best course selections for next year.
Please encourage your child to speak with his or her teachers when making these decisions. As always, we welcome you to contact the teacher and/or guidance counselor if you have any specific concerns or questions.
As in the past, our registration meetings will be in the evenings so that you have an opportunity to meet with your child’s advisor. Your child’s HUB advisor will send home a postcard with a meeting date and time. If you have a conflict, you may contact the advisor to set up an alternate time. We plan to meet with our rising 12th, 11th, and 10th graders on the evenings of March 7th and 8th. Our rising 9th graders will have their course selection meetings on the evenings of March 14th and 15th.
This is a very important time for our students as they make important decisions about their academic courses for next year. We look forward to having you meet with us as we work together to help build a successful and productive academic plan. Thank you for your time and support. One Daniel!
A Message from Our Athletic Director: Tommy Plumblee
Our basketball teams will host their final regular season home game on Friday, February 2. They will play BHP. This will be Senior Night with the girls tipping off at 6:00pm.
Both varsity basketball teams are competing for the playoffs; the remainder of the regular season will determine region standings. Please check the DWD home page and calendar for updates about post-season schedules and plan to come out and cheer on the Lions!
The wrestling team competed in the region tournament at BHP on Tuesday, January 31st. Their season wrap-up will be included in the March Newsletter.
National Signing Day is Wednesday, February 7th. Six Daniel athletes will
be recognized for having the opportunity to play in college. Look for more in the March newsletter, as well as on the Daniel home page and Facebook page.
Spring sport schedules will be released soon. Check the website. Spring is a busy sports season with the baseball, softball, soccer, boys’ tennis, boys’ golf, and track teams competing. All events except boys’ golf will take place on the Daniel campus.
Follow Daniel Athletics on Twitter @DWDAthletics.
Come out and support the Lions!
A Message from Our School Nurses
Flu season is upon us and in full swing.
When does my child need to stay home?
Temperature of 100° or higher with cough and/or sore throat, body aches, headache, fatigue (feeling very tired with no reason), vomiting or diarrhea (this is more common in children than adults with the flu illness).
*It is important to remember that not everyone with the flu will have a fever. Not everyone with the above symptoms will have the flu, but may not feel well enough to be at school.*
How long does my child need to stay home?
Before returning to school, students need to be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (Advil, Tylenol, etc.) for 24 hours. If your child’s physician has written a note for your child to be absent from school, then he or she needs to remain out of school for the full period of time the physician has requested.
*You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after becoming sick. Some people, especially young children and people with weakened immune systems, might be able to infect others for an even longer time.*
If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Roy and Nurse Duncan in the health room.

Parents of Seniors:

We strongly encourage you to submit the photos online via the Google form at the link mentioned below--NOT VIA EMAIL. Emailed photos will NOT be included in the video. The deadline for submissions is February 10.

If the pictures are not turned in by February 10, your child will probably not be included in the video. Senior video pictures should NOT be the same as the yearbook's senior ad pictures.
The best pictures are the ones that reflect your child's personality or include a number of seniors - particularly when they were in elementary school and middle school.
There is no fee for including your pictures in the video. The pictures that are collected are compiled into a video the that the seniors watch on Awards Day. If your child would like to buy a copy and did not already purchase one at registration, they are available for $15. AFJROTC
On January 10th and January 20th, some of D. W. Daniel High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC Flying Lions were able to participate in something most people only dream about doing. SC-941 teamed up with the Anderson Civil Air Patrol's (CAP) Art Phillips and Barry Stewart to fly a Cessna-182 aircraft. The cadets who participated were selected for this first time opportunity for our unit. It was the opportunity of a lifetime. A total of fifteen cadets were selected and five were chosen to sit up front during the flights. The cadets riding in the co-pilot’s seat were fortunate enough to pilot the Cessna-182 under the supervision of senior CAP pilot Barry Stewart. During the five sorties, one student was up front with an instructor and another two students were riding in the back seat positions. Last year, 32 cadets flew in the AFJROTC flight orientation program with the Anderson CAP. The flight orientation program between AFJROTC and the CAP is an excellent way for cadets to learn about and experience flight. All flights are free to the students paid for by the United States Air Force. For the first time in our group’s history, the D. W. Daniel Lions actually took flight, truly making SC-941 the Flying Lions! Based on the success of this program, we plan to continue this partnership well into the future.
Cookie Mining
AP Environmental Science students have been mining chocolate chip cookies to simulate ore mining in our soil unit. The students collected as many chocolate chips as they could, rented equipment (toothpicks, paper clips), were charged a labor fee, and even re-mediated the site.
Sheep Dissection
Anatomy and Physiology students have been dissecting sheep hearts and learning about the mammalian circulatory system during this unit.
Insects for Dinner
In this picture, AP Environmental Science students are learning about new food sources and tasting sour cream and onion crickets, as well as chocolate covered insects. Yum! Excellent protein with little waste or water use.
