WM 3rd Grade Curriculum Update
May 2019
Reading and Writing
Reading
During May, 3rd Graders will end the year doing a Social Issues unit in Reading Workshop. We will explore social issues that happen in real life as well as issues that can be solved quickly or not quickly. We will spend time immersed in great read-alouds and book club work.
Writing
The last month of Writing Workshop has the 3rd graders exploring Fairy Tale writing. More importantly they will be writing adaptive fairy tales based on some of their favorite classics! It’s a fun unit that joins all the things they have learned about narrative writing into one.
Math
Unit 7- Extending Multiplication & Fractions
Multiplication Beyond the Basics
One- by Two-Digit Multiplication
Fractions as Parts of a Whole & Parts of a Set
Fractions at Work
In this unit, 3rd graders will learn to multiply single digit numbers by multiples of ten. They will build and sketch 1 digit by 2 digit multiplication combinations. They will also practice representing fractions as parts of a set as well as parts of a whole.
Science
3rd Graders rotate through these FOSS Science kits throughout the year.
Energy and Matter: Students learn about the transfer of energy from one form to another.
Sound: Students learn how sound is generated, how it is made louder and softer, higher and lower.
Water: Students learn the properties, changes, and interactions of water.
Social Studies
We are learning about the different branches and levels of government, basic rights of citizens and the voting process.
LMC - Library
We’ll experiment with different methods of organizing materials and ideas, and we’ll examine how these ideas apply to the organization of library books.
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: Third grade will finish learning about Pictures of the Exhibition by Mussorgsky, study the music of John Williams, and finish out the year reviewing the concepts and rhythms we’ve learned this year. We may also revisit ukulele from the beginning of the year if time allows! Mrs. Spahn’s Music classes will also be having their Spring Music Sharing Days on June 3, 4, and 5! Look for more info to come home about this in June.
Ms. Soltis’ classes will be working on: finishing our World Music studies with the country of New Zealand, specifically studying the dances, music, stick routines, and culture of the Maori people. We will end the year by learning how to read notes on the staff, preparing us for more advanced music in 4th grade.
Technology
Students will use spreadsheet tools or graphing programs to represent and analyze data. Students will continue to strengthen their typing speed and words per minute.

PE
Our Jump Rope For Heart Event was a HUGE success. We broke the WM Record and raised $15,110 dollars this year! Thank you for all your hard work and support. The month of May will be filled with our track & field unit, disc golf, and frisbee. We are looking forward to being able to get outside as much as possible!
