Prendiville Catholic College

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
This weeks Principal's post cartoon represents the "I" in SMILE - Involve.
The school environment provides everyone with opportunities to experience team work. Being involved and involving others in common goals is important and enjoyable. You can reach for the stars but reaching for the stars with others who share your goals is much easier.
CLASS OF 2025 ENROLMENTS
Enrolment sessions are now taking place for our class of 2025, our Year 7 intake for 2020.
I really enjoy meeting the parents and students at these sessions and it is always exciting meeting the Prendivillians of the future. Places are always limited at Prendiville Catholic College and 2020 Year 7 has approximately 118 siblings which does not leave a lot of room for new families to the College. If you have a sibling currently in Year 5 at any feeder school, you are reminded that the child must still be enrolled. Please check that your sibling has an application for enrolment otherwise they may miss out.
During these sessions I am always conscious of the question, why choose Prendiville Catholic College? I work very hard at these sessions to share what is at the heart of our College. It is important that what is shared is that we do whatever it takes to deliver. A recent article reviewing Ken Robinson's recent book affirms that Prendiville Catholic College works very hard at the core of what is required of a great school in these contemporary times. I have edited the article below for your reading:
"Creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status." That's one of the many quotes that has made Sir Ken Robinson's 2006 lecture on rethinking the nation's schools become one of the most popular TED talks — with more than 50 million views.
In his new book, "You, Your Child and School: Navigate Your Way to the Best Education", Robinson takes his ideas about what a school should be and translates them into specific things parents can look for. He shares:
There's so much pressure for parents to believe that a good school is defined by high test scores and high rates of entrance to college and university, but there's a lot more to education than that. One of the things to look at is the balance of the curriculum — which in shorthand is what it is we want kids to learn, and learn from. You want to make sure that there is a real balance and dynamism in the school curriculum. Testing tends to focus schools, for understandable reasons, on the areas on which they themselves are going to be judged politically. So there's been a narrowing of the curriculum in many areas. We've seen a reduction in things like arts programs, in recess, in practical vocational programs, because they're not subject to these tests. The emphasis on STEM — science technology engineering and math — they're very important. But the arts, the humanities, physical education, are just as important. So that's the first thing. I always encourage parents to take a look at the curriculum.
Also look at the quality of teaching, that's the next thing. Assessment is important, it's a vital part of education and testing can have some constructive and important roles in it. It's about the balance. It's about asking what assessment's for, and it should ideally be there to support, encourage and inform children's development and achievement.
And then the other is the physical environment of the school. Look at what's on the walls. Is there kids' work on the walls? Exhibitions? That also taps into the overall culture — you know, what sort of values are school promoting and how closely does it work with parents and the broader community? I think these are all reasonable criteria for the health and vitality of a school. (Mindshift KQED news March 2018)
My hope is that current and future parents of our College recognise the above as being strongly present at Prendiville Catholic College. I also believe that these characteristics at Prendiville Catholic College are even more emphasised as they are underpinned by a Catholic Identity which is foundational to all we do.
HOUSE IDENTITY
It is getting close to the reveal of our new College Mascots. The mascots are inspired by the values and qualities of our College House Patrons. The student workshops with Mike Nicholas from "Run Mouse Run" have resulted in our Houses now having wonderful mascots to identify with. The mascots will be revealed on Prendiville Day and the launch video will be made available to the College community.
YEAR 7 CAMP
Like the Year 12 retreat, the Year 7 camp is an important part of College life and transition to Prendiville. This year we have trialed having all the Year 7 students at one venue. The Year 7 camp has a history of great success providing all students further opportunity to learn about their new school and also strengthen their sense of belonging. Thank you to our Heads of House who have worked collaboratively to bring the camp together. Staff support of the camp is valued and already I have received affirmation from parents for providing the opportunity. Thank you so much to those staff who attended the camp. Your support of this important activity is wholeheartedly valued.
YOUTH MINISTER PROJECT
The big news this week has been the employment of three Youth Ministers to our staff. These appointments are being funded through the Chaplaincy grant. The three amazing former students who pioneer this project are:
• Abbey Knox
• Leah Massari
• Emily Agostino
Abbey, Leah and Emily will be employed by the College as staff so if you see them around please make them feel welcome.
The Youth Minister Project will have the following goals:
• Develop a Youth Ministry Group that meets regularly at the College.
• Develop a PCC Alumni Immersion Program extending on the pilot program of 2017
• Provide practical support in the major mission programs at the College (eg. Year 12 Retreat, Grandparents Day Mass etc.)
• Support the weekly celebrations of the Eucharist at the College
The team will engage at the College for a combined 12 -15 hours per week initially and will work closely with Karen Rice, Marg Tavelli and Paddy Devlin. They will be based in the UBUNTU Outreach Centre.
WEDNESDAY MASS
Every Wednesday at 8.00am our College chaplains celebrate Mass for our community in the Good Shepherd Chapel. All parents and friends are welcome to attend. This is a short mass and is a wonderful way to stop during the busyness of the week. You are warmly invited to share this weekly mass with students, staff and parents.

WINTER UNIFORM
Students and parents are reminded of the change to winter uniform for all students from the first day of Term 2. The College blazer is a compulsory item that must be worn to and from school until the end of PCG each morning. Dresses that require alteration must be ready for the first day of term to sit neatly at the top of the knee.
CRAZY SOCK DAY
YEAR 7 CAMP
My camp experience was exceptionally amazing. My favourite activity had to be the rock climbing and vertical challenge. I personally loved them both because it was both a challenge and a trusting in your friends activity. It was a challenge for me due to the fact that I am extremely scared of heights but it got me to realise that there is nothing to fear about them, mostly because your friends have got you and they are helping you every step of the way. They cheer you on when you think you can't do it and they might even try to push you out of your comfort zone because they want you to achieve something that you may not have tried before. They may even push you to be in that area of being extra of the ordinary, to be extraordinary, because maybe they got to know a lot more about the people around me, the people that are going to stay with me for six years or more. That has got to be the thing I love most about the camp and I hope it was also an amazing experience for the people around me.

I really enjoyed Year 7 camp this year. It was fun, exciting and we got to get to know new people and make new friends. My favourite activity at the Year 7 camp was the flying fox. I definitely thought that I challenged myself to go up there and jump off the high ledge. It was really fun to get to do all activities throughout the two days that we were there, like all the team activities on the beach, the bike riding, the kayaking and the rock climbing. I also really liked it when all the peer leaders came for the last night from each House and came up with lots of fun games for us to play. This Year 7 camp was so much fun and I’d love to do it again.

Year 7 Camp 2018 was an amazing experience. We had so much fun, my favourite was all the water activities. Not only did we go canoeing, we also got to build our own raft and played many beach games. Some of the other activities which we did were cycling, rock climbing and the flying fox. The nights were not so great as my sleeping bag went missing on day one and was only found the day we left. Besides from that, it was an experience I will not forget and to top it all off we went to Adventure World on the last day which was a blast. Thanks.

Year 7 camp was an exciting adventure. We did lots of different fun activities like water activities, climbing, bike riding and lots more. Some people did the vertical challenge and others did flying fox. I did the flying fox; it was 9 meters tall and 100 meters long. I was scared at first but when you go down you are fine and want to go down again and again. With most of the activities everyone has to work together as a team to be able to do the activities. This was good because it helped people to work together and become better friends. On Friday we went to Adventure World. We got to go on lots of rides, water slides, roller coasters, and scary rides. I went on the Black Widow which was really scary, everyone screamed. I had so much fun with my friends!! Year 7 Camp 2018 was lots of fun.

Year 7 Camp was an amazing adventure. I awoke that morning feeling excited and looking forward to hanging out with my friends at Woodman Point, swimming and paddling. We had fun with climbing and the vertical assault. The vertical assault was challenging but I was determined to jump on and take it on. The team effort made all this easier. The highlight of the camp was the last day at Adventure World. Go-carts, water slides. hot chips, roller coaster rides and a bunch of people who love to have fun all made this camp an experience I will never forget.

Year 7 camp was amazing. It had heaps of fun activities. My favourite was the bike riding but other people also liked the flying fox, rock climbing, first aid, vertical challenge, paddling, beach games and raft building. We had the best breakfast of bacon and eggs and cereal and toast. For lunch we had a delicious salad. Dinner was lasagne and vegetables. On the last day we went to Adventure World. There was so much to do on the water slides and roller-coasters. I had so much fun.

GIRLS PROGRAMMING NETWORK
Last Saturday 10th March, Girls Programming Network (GPN) was held at Edith Cowan University, it was co-ordinated by female IT university students and targeted at high school girls interested in learning to program or improve their software development skills. The Girls' Programming Network (GPN) is a national program initially developed by girls at Sydney University and is now run by key universities throughout Australia.
PCC had 4 students attend the GPN event; Charlotte Swailes (Yr 12), Jessica Blanas (Yr 12), Jasleen Hundal (Yr 10) and Sage Groenewegen (Yr 10). Computer Science teachers, Bronwen Hyde and Kerrie Beech both volunteered as mentors assisting the students on the day. It was a really fun day providing an opportunity for girls to speak to mentors about university life and STEM careers.
The next GPN event is held at ECU campus.

YEAR 10 ADVANCED PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In Week 7, the Year 10 Advanced Physical Education students attended a session with 2Hfd to widen their understanding of the use of Sports Science in practice. The students were put through a series of fitness tests to experience what it is like to be an elite athlete and also to look at how Sports Science is used to improve athletic performance.
The students were put through tests such as the YoYo Test, Vertical Jump Test, 20m acceleration test to name a few. The students will then compare these results as part of their assessment. It was a great day led by Dean and Shane Pickering from 2Hfd and assisted by ex-Prendivillian Ciaran Salinger.

SPORT NOTICES
Swimming Summary and ACC carnival results
The interschool swimming team competed in the B Division ACC Swimming carnival on Tuesday 20 March. After a solid seven weeks of training, there were 44 personal best times achieved by students on the carnival day. It was clear that improvements had been made in regard to the students' fitness and technique due to the hard work at training. Alyssa Burgess broke the U16 Girls 50m Backstroke record and was announced Champion Girl. Overall, Prendiville finished 6th in the combined aggregate and will remain in B Division for 2019. The swimming team should be proud to have represented the College in such a high division and for their outstanding efforts on the day.
Cross Country Training
Students are invited to participate in Cross Country training that is provided by the Physical Education teachers and external running coach. Training sessions will be take place on Thursday mornings from 7am - 8.15am for the remainder of the term. This will change to Friday mornings in Term 2 with the possibility of a Wednesday morning training session as well. This year we will have Michael Lori train the students who is a professional triathlete. All students are encouraged to attend training, which will continue throughout Term 2 in the lead up to the ACC Cross Country carnival in Week 5.
Interhouse Cross Country Carnival
Students can now sign up to participate in the Interhouse Cross Country carnival. This will take place on Friday 6 April from 3.30 - 5pm at the College. The Cross Country is a great opportunity for students to represent their House and contribute to their House point tally. Students can participate leisurely with friends or competitively. All parents are invited to the school oval to watch the event. A sausage sizzle is provided for all participants at the completion of the race. Students can sign up through their login on ResultsHQ which needs to be completed prior to the carnival day.
CAS Winter trials
As the summer CAS season comes to a close, students should now start to consider if they would like to be a part of a winter CAS team. The sports that are available are listed on the school Sportal page. Signups will open in Week 9 with trials held in Week 11 this term. CAS is a great opportunity for students to represent the College in an interschool competition, participate in regular sport and make new friends. Senior (Year 10-12) CAS games are held on Tuesdays after school, Juniors (Year 7-9) play on Wednesdays after school and Junior AFL is played on Thursdays after school. Training days are decided by the coach. Please contact Miss Mayer if you have any questions.

FLEXED STUDENTS HOST COMMUNITY NETWORK MEETING IN THE PRENDIVILLE GALLERY
On Thursday our FlexEd students had the privilege of hosting a Community Network Meeting, held in the Prendiville Gallery. The Gallery is home to a collection of bespoke artworks, fine furniture and jewellery. It provided the perfect ambiance for a group of enterprising business colleagues to meet, exchange ideas and collaborate.
Ella Morris and Ella Cooper, Year 12, welcomed our guests with a short speech and an invitation to tour the TIDE studios where younger students were working on glass and wood projects. Bailey Williams and Tyson Bignell, Year 11, worked quietly in the background on a glassworking commission for St Kieran's Primary School. They were available to discuss the processes involved in creating the distinctive fused glass crosses for which the College is developing a reputation.
We would like to thank Prendiville Reef Break Café staff, Ben and Sally, for providing beautifully presented light refreshments for the event. Thanks also go to Chris Greenwood, Prendiville Marketing, for organising the meeting and providing FlexEd students with a wonderful opportunity to engage with community leaders.
