HHS Counseling Newsletter
Vol. 2
Hello Huskies!!!!
Progress report grades will be posted Friday morning. Please make sure you are monitoring grades on Infinite Campus. If you have any questions about your grades, make sure to contact your teacher. Please reach out to teachers and counselors if you need help with anything.
Seniors have been meeting with their school counselor on post-secondary planning. School counselors are making sure that their students have their required credits for graduation, that they have a plan beyond high school, and giving advice based on those plans. It has been great meeting with you all and we are happy to see how well you are doing.
If you are a senior and have not yet scheduled your one on one meeting with your counselor, please make sure you do so. These are important so that you and your counselor have a good plan for your senior year.
Life has become very different for all of us. We are now at home, instead of at school and we are trying to connect with each other on-line or through other forms of technology. Your teachers are trying to help you continue to learn with on-line resources and your parents are trying to help you figure all this out. It has not been easy, but we are all helping each other!
The most important thing to remember is that this will not last forever. This is what we have to do right now, but we will be able to go back to school and see our teachers and our friends again soon. When we face difficult times, there are always some good things that can come out of it. We are here for you.

Program Summary
In addition to classroom enrichment, Chandler Education Foundation is committed to investing in our future by providing CUSD high school students with experiences that directly engage them in strengthening our community. The IMPACT Chandler Scholars program requires a student’s formal commitment in their freshman year:
Students commit to:
maintain a 3.4 or greater GPA
cumulative attendance at 95% or greater
submit at least 100 hours of community service* before April 1st of their senior year
Students who fulfill all program requirements are considered IMPACT Scholars and receive additional honors at graduation including letters of recommendation and an honor cord to wear with their cap and gown.
IMPACT Chandler Scholars are then considered eligible to apply for an IMPACT Scholarship. In years past, this scholarship has been approximately $1,000 per award and is based upon available funding each year.
In 2020 the Foundation awarded over $67,000 in IMPACT Scholarships.
*IMPACT Chandler Scholars program participants are asked to volunteer in their community. We encourage students to volunteer for a variety of organizations. Volunteer hours will not be credited for service provided at a faith-based organization where volunteer time does not benefit the broader community. For example, church services/childcare/meal service for members of church. See the downloadable Community Service Activity form for additional and contact us if further clarification is needed.
***Attention Seniors***
Incoming 20-21 seniors: The deadline for hours to be submitted is April 1, 2021. The requirement for the first 35 hours to be submitted by junior year has been waived at this time for your graduating class. 100 total hours are due by April 1. Looking for ways to volunteer during this unusual time? Check out our volunteer links at the bottom of this page.

HHS MENTAL WELLNESS
Feeling stressed?
What’s the Story?
A big part of what stresses us out is the story we tell ourselves about what’s happening. When feeling stressed, and ask yourself, “What’s the story?” Is it I will fail the test, or that no one likes me? Ask if she can drop the story, and just notice what is actually happening.
Thoughts are incredibly seductive, making us think they are completely true and vitally important. Teens, given their intense, developmentally-appropriate focus on the self, often believe the negative stream of self-critical thoughts in their heads.
Notice the Good
When we’re stressed, it puts the brain in a fearful state, and therefore we start to pay more attention to threats, which only makes the stress worse! Encourage your teen to notice the things that are good, or even just okay, right now. Challenge her to go through her day and notice ten things that are beautiful, helpful, kind, or pleasant.
No Emotion Lasts Forever
A major component of teen angst is the feeling that “I’ll ALWAYS be miserable.” With mindfulness, we come to understand that no emotion lasts forever. When you pay close attention to it, an emotion is actually a constantly shifting combination of sensations and thoughts and feelings and memories. No two seconds of your emotional experience are identical.
In Amy Saltzman’s A Still Quiet Place for Teens, she encourages teens to “graph” their emotional experience. For example, anger may spike quickly, and then fade slowly, while sadness is more of a gentle sine wave. By tracking their emotion, and attending more to the contours of the experience (how long it lasts, if it’s intermittent or continuous, etc,), as opposed to the content of it, teens come to understand the way that emotions play out in their own bodies. They can actually experience (as opposed to just “knowing”) that emotions are impermanent.
6 Questions to Ask Yourself Everyday to Create Happiness
1. What am I grateful for today?
2. Who am I checking in on today?
3. What are some expectations of normal that I can let go of today?
4. How am I getting outside today?
5. How am I moving my body today?
6. What beauty am I creating today?
