Day of Code
This year, Code.org is sponsoring a morning event for parents -- complete with refreshments and swag -- to come to Heritage and code side-by-side with their kids. Our students are so excited to show parents all that they have learned and all they can do as young computer scientists. If you would like to attend, please pre-register. No experience is necessary!
Heritage World Market
This year we are so excited to announce that second grade wants to represent the entertainment portion of the World Market. This event will celebrate and highlight our diverse community at Heritage Elementary. We are busy planning different games that we can create that represent how people celebrate December holidays around the world.
The World Market is scheduled for December 14th from 3:00 to 6:00. We have included a sign-up genius to ensure that we have Heritage 2nd graders at each station throughout the evening. We also want students and families to be able to be able to walk around and enjoy the World Market when they are not running the games. If you sign up to bring in materials (white lunch bags), please send those in by December 8th. Thank you!
The Sign up Genius can be found here if you would like your child to participate in the evening at the event. All students will be involved in creating the games!
Winter Party
Christa Siladie has graciously volunteered to do our Winter Party. On the attached sign-up genius, you will see that we need 6 volunteers. There will be 4 stations set up throughout the classroom. If you are able to volunteer, please sign up here!
Christa is asking for $3 donations so that she can purchase the necessary materials. Please send those into Mrs. Holtz by December 9th.
Thank you!
Semester 1 EPRs
I believe that EPRs (Elementary Progress Reports) will be released to parents at 4:00 pm on Friday, December 16th. Your child's EPR will be available at this website. Please use your Infinite Campus Parent Portal sign on. Please take a look at your child's progress for this school year at that time. Please email me with any questions!
Classroom News
Math
- This week we will continue to work on double-digit subtraction. This is a very difficult task! We will be assessing this chapter prior to Winter break.
- A little poem that we have discussed in class goes: More on the top, no need to stop (no regrouping needed), More on the floor, go next door (regrouping needed).
- Many of us were taught the word "borrowing". We, however, have changed that terminology to "regrouping" as it better describes the concept.
- If you would like to work on math with your child at home, you have access to their eBook and lessons at home. Have them log into their ConnectEd account. Their password should be on their PW sheet, which can be found on Google Drive. If you are unable to find it, please send me an email and I will be happy to get it for you.
Reading
Guided Reading
- 9:00-9:45: Parent Volunteers and I meet with your child, ask comprehension questions, and break apart unknown words. So far this school year, we have used Storia. Storia is an online, digital library.
Reading Strategy Time
- 9:45-10:15: Students are working on strategies during reading flooding time.
- Some of the strategies include relating ideas, context clues, distinguishing important information, literary elements, making judgments, inferences/conclusions, and text structures.
Writing
- This week students are working on their individual word sorts, a storybook, reading responses and blogs.
- There should be at least 1 blog posted this week.
- Here is the link to your child's blog page. You can find their blog page by their initials. Feel free to leave comments on blog pages. If you could write 2 glows (things they are doing well) with 1 grow (things they need to work on). The support would be great!
