Buffett Bulletin
August 21, 2019
Welcome Back Bobcats!
Welcome to the first edition of the Buffett Bulletin for 2019-20. With a opening of a locker, smell of a new textbook, sharpening of a pencil, and login into a laptop we are off to an extraordinary year filled with excellence in academics.
This bulletin should arrive in your emails on Wednesday or Thursday of each week. You will find weekly updates, important reminders, pictures of events and athletics, as well as links to helpful resources.
We hope you find it useful and worth a weekly read. Enjoy!
Early Dismissal - Friday, August 30
Next Friday, August 30, students will be dismissed at 11:30. OPS transportation will run as normal.
A sack lunch will be served on this day. Your child is welcome to bring their own sack lunch if you wish. Normal lunch charges will apply for any student eating a school sack lunch.
We will utilize this day to teach our students Digital Citizenship lessons utilizing curriculum from Common Sense Media. Feel free to visit Common Sense Media's website for example content.
NATIONAL COLLEGE COLORS DAY - Friday, August 30
The Friday before Labor Day across the United States students, parents, family, fans and alumni display their team spirit on National College Colors Day. This day is celebrated annually by wearing your college team’s colors and college or university apparel.
Students, wear your favorite college colors or shirt on this day. It will be a fun way to see everyone's favorite colleges. Can't wait to see the college colors!
FALL MAP Testing
District-wide fall NWEA MAP testing will begin on Aug. 26. This may sound really early! MAP testing is a measure of a student's growth from the beginning of the year to the end.
Are you new to MAP? Click on the picture below to visit NWEA's Parent Took Kit website.
Students will be testing according to this schedule:
- Aug. 26-29-All ELA Classes
- Sept. 3-6-All Science Classes
- Sept. 9-13-All Math Classes
The most helpful things you can do to help your child have a successful testing experience are:
- encourage them to do their best/take their time
- don't make appointments during testing times
- provide a healthy breakfast
- help your child get plenty of sleep (recommended amount of sleep for middle school students is 9-11 hours)
Technology at Buffett
Almost all student laptops have been assigned and/or handed out to students! If your child does not have their laptop, it means we do not have their signed student contract. Please send a signed contract to school with your child. Your child can work with their homeroom teacher to get their laptop to the right place in order to receive their laptop.
Below are two helpful resources to help guide you in helping your student maintain proper care and use of their laptop. You can click on the second image for a Powerpoint presentation presented to our new 5th grade parents on the first day of school.
Drop Off & Pick Up Procedures
Join Our Safety Patrol
Are you looking to get involved at Buffett? Safety Patrol is looking for students who are eager to be a part of a team. Safety Patrol meets in the morning from 7:00am - 7:25am. Students are on duty to patrol for a week at at time. A schedule is made my Ms. Aggen and sent out at month at a time. If you are interested in joining our team, pick up an application in the office. If you have any other questions, contact Ms. Amye Aggen.
Allergy Alert
Due to a severe airborne allergy in our building, Buffett needs to be a fish and shellfish free zone. Please refrain from sending any kind of fish or shellfish in cold lunches with your student.
Many students have food allergies so we ask that you talk to your children about the importance of not sharing food. It is also Buffett's policy that no food or treats are brought into classrooms. Thank you for your cooperation.
Food allergies affect about 6% to 8% of children in the United States. Allergic reactions can be life-threatening, and in rare cases deadly. While emergency treatment is available for allergic reactions, there is no cure yet. The only treatment for food allergies is strict avoidance of allergens. Sometimes a small amount of allergen can cause a reaction.
