School Closing Updates
Earlier this week, state officials announced that South Carolina schools would remain closed through “the duration of the month of April” under executive order of the governor of South Carolina.
As a result of the announcement and in an attempt to continue meeting the needs of our students, parents, and teachers; School District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties is today providing important updates to parents/guardians and staff regarding report cards, third-quarter grades, distance learning, spring break and more.
We appreciate the support of our D5 community and are committed to communicating with our families during these unprecedented times.
DISTANCE LEARNING
Distance learning will continue in School District Five. Our teachers and district staff are working to create additional instructional materials for students and possible opportunities for some students to participate in teleconferencing and two-way communications between teachers and students.
- A new webpage has been created to provide more resources to parents, teachers and students: www.lexrich5.org/distancelearning.
- Instructional packet pick-up opportunities will be held next week for students needing hard copy assignments. See your school’s pick-up details here: https://www.lexrich5.org/packetpickup
- Parents/students will be notified by teachers of any virtual classroom or teleconferencing opportunities in the coming weeks. Our district and schools are working to make these opportunities available in a safe, secure way that benefits our students.
- Teachers and other district staff will continue to work virtually. Students and parents can email their teachers or an administrator for help and instruction on materials. Office hours for teachers are Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
SPRING BREAK
School District Five will still observe spring break. April 10 is a Teacher/Student Holiday. All schools and offices will be closed April 13-17.
No distance learning assignments will be provided on these dates, and there will be no virtual staff office hours. School District Five will still provide meals for the week of spring break. Five days-worth of meals will be available on Monday, April 13. Visit our website to see our school year calendar: www.lexrich5.org/calendar
REPORT CARDS & THIRD QUARTER GRADES
Due to the impact of the closure on students, teachers and families; School District Five is modifying the process for third-quarter report cards.
- Third nine weeks grades for students in grades 3-12 will be finalized and posted electronically in PowerSchool on April 7. Distribution was scheduled for April 1.
- Parents/guardians requiring hard copies of their student’s third-quarter report card should contact an administrator at their school (i.e. principal, assistant principal, etc.): www.lexrich5.org/staffdirectory
- Standards-based report cards for students in 4K and grades K, 1, or 2 will be printed and mailed home because they cannot be displayed in PowerSchool. They will be printed and mailed on April 7.
- Assignments given during the closure will not be included in grades for the third quarter. They will be factored into fourth-quarter grades.
- While students are expected to complete assignments during the closure as part of distance learning, a short grace period will be granted when schools reopen. Students who have not completed their work will have up to 5 days to turn in any incomplete assignments once schools reopen.
School District Five is committed to helping our students, teachers and staff adjust during the closure. With all our plans, our goals are to minimize the impacts of the closure on our students and ensure they continue learning. Please reach out to your child’s teachers or school administrators, if you have any questions or concerns.
STATE APPROVED FEEDING SITES
Free food offerings sites will continue at six schools in Lexington-Richland School District Five. School District Five will open feeding sites on Mondays only. Students will receive 5 days-worth of breakfast and lunch items, during the Monday meal offering.
There are 6 locations across the district, serving meals 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the front of each school under the canopy. To find a location and learn more, visit: bit.ly/393bj1V.
ENROLLMENT/WITHDRAWAL STUDENTS DURING CLOSURE
All schools in School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties are still enrolling and
withdrawing students, but the procedures have been adjusted while our schools and offices are closed. A working email or phone number is essential to the completion of either process.

News from JROTC
CLC CANCELLATION: The Citadel staff has informed us that the campus will not be available during June. The campus closure combined with negative feedback from participating JROTC units to attend CLC during July, has resulted in a decision to cancel this summer's course. There will forthcoming information on the possibility of a local leadership course once the effects of COVID-19 are normalized. If you have questions or concerns please contact Maj Slade or MSgt Whetstine at rslade@lexrich5.org or jwhesti@lexrich5.org respectively.
Alive at 25 Virtual Classroom Training
Dear Alive at 25 Partner,
I hope you are staying safe during this global pandemic and time of uncertainty. In an effort to accommodate your students until it is safe to reopen schools, and after much feedback from parents, we are temporarily offering the Alive at 25 class online. We offered this option to 100 students from cancelled classes, and it was incredibly well received. Parents and students are excited to be able to complete the course while they are restricted to distance learning.
These live, virtual classes will be led by an Alive at 25 instructor and monitored by SCNSC staff. We will conduct the online classes just as we would if we were in the classroom with students. Students will receive a certificate for participating and completing the full class. As soon as this social distancing period ends, we will return to offering classroom training.
Please help us share this option with your students and parents who may wish to participate in the virtual classroom courses.

Our message to our students
We have heard from some of you that it can be very overwhelming receiving all of your assignments at one time. Please remember, no one expects you to do all of the assignments on the first day. Take a breath and sort your assignments. Some of your teachers have given you suggested deadlines to provide some structure for you and help you stay on track. Sometimes, you may work better in the evening or on the weekend. There is some flexibility. However, please remember, this is our new school for now.
Please reach out to your teachers or administrators by email if you have any questions. We are here to support you. Your assignments are posted on Google Classroom, so please check all of your Google Classrooms daily. In the event there are paper copies, we will notify you and explain the system for accessing those packets.
In the meantime, stay safe and healthy. Your Fox Family misses you, and we hope to see you soon.
