Slavery in America
By Carlie Frost
Why was there slavery in America?
The reason there was slavery in America was because they needed workers. Most people needed people to work in the fields of their farm or in a factory. Slavery lasted for about 200 years and was brought to an end by the 13th amendment.
Who was Harriet Tubman?
Harriet Tubman was an African woman who ran away from a plantation where she was a salve. After freeing herself, she came back to free others. She lead 300 slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad.
The African Slaves were not allowed to read or write so they had to find other ways to communicate without it being obvious to their masters. Two songs they would use were 'Follow the Drinking Gourd' and 'Go Down Moses'. These songs provided a sense of hope and freedom for the slaves. The songs also had hidden messages in them saying how to get to freedom.
