The Underground Railroad was an underground tunnel system created by Harriet Tubman, used to get African Slaves out of America and into Canada where they could be free.
Who was Harriet Tubman?
Harriet Tubman was an African woman who ran away from a plantation where she was a salve. After freeing herself, she came back to free others. She lead 300 slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad.
African Music
The African Slaves were not allowed to read or write so they had to find other ways to communicate without it being obvious to their masters. Two songs they would use were 'Follow the Drinking Gourd' and 'Go Down Moses'. These songs provided a sense of hope and freedom for the slaves. The songs also had hidden messages in them saying how to get to freedom.
