Peek at the Week

LANGUAGE ARTS - We will continue our reading unit on money when we read about a woman named Madam C.J. Walker who created her own business and became a self-made millionaire! Each week we focus on comprehension skills and this week we will be reviewing how to summarize. In grammar we will be working on correctly using and identifying pronouns. This week we will be writing short stories about something that happened over winter break and then move on to how-to papers.

HISTORY -This week we will be learning all about Canada!

Character Education

Each month students should bring in examples of the monthly character trait to hang on our class bulletin board. January's trait is Self-Control.

Kindness Elves!

This past December, we had two very special kindness elves that visited our classroom! Every few days they would leave a very special note asking us to do something kind for others. One day, the children wrote friendly letters and cards to children that were spending the holidays at Children's Hospital! Another day we wrote special cards to the elderly! The kids did such a nice job. Evan and his family were able to deliver all of these heartfelt cards for us!

Here is a note from Evan's family: Half of the letters were given to Evan's grandparents to bring to her facility and they said that Evan's great grandma delivered the letters to all of the residents there and she was super excited about it! The other half of the letters were delivered by Evan at another assisted living facility. He was able to meet a veteran of the Korean War and many other grateful people. All of your students' letters/cards were enjoyed by all and they truly brought smiles to many faces.

We also acted like kindness elves and were able to show kindness in so many ways this month! Students were given little paper elves to write special notes on and encouraged to complete acts of kindness to family, friends, strangers and other people throughout the school building. Check out our fun door decoration where children secretly wrote down some of the kind things they did throughout the month! The kids were so secretive that other students and teachers thought the building thought that there were real elves running throughout the school doing kind things!

ASK YOUR CHILD

What did you learn about Canada?

What does a How-To paper need? What is the purpose of a How-To paper?

What does self control mean? Why is showing self control important? Give examples of how you show self control on a daily basis.

***Bring an example of SELF CONTROL in the media and bring it to class to hang on the bulletin board.***

Winter FUN

We had so much fun making our snowman paintings! I hope the lucky recipient of your child's painting loves it so much! It was A LOT of work! :)

The class really enjoyed when National Honor Society student, Daniel Collette, read winter books to us and had us play a snowman dice game. We also listened to some lovely carolers from the Upper School choir and chemistry class! Lastly, we had a blast creating our very own life size snowmen! This activity was hilarious!!!
