Spiritual Reflection
Miss Sheila O'Callaghan
Many people do not understand Advent. They use this time to celebrate Christmas early. What we should do is wait for Jesus to come in glory, just as the world waited long ago for the first coming of Jesus.
There are many beautiful decorations we can use to show how we can prepare for Christmas. How about an Advent wreath? We can also use snowflakes, pinecones or other things that are signs of winter. Remember, these are things found in nature and given to us by God. The Advent wreath is simple to make and use. It is a circle of evergreen branches with four candles around it. The circular wreath is a sign of God’s loving care, which has no ending. We still have time to show our love for God as we wait and pray for Jesus coming in glory.
Our Lady is always present in our lives. December 12, is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Last week we heard about Juan Diego. He had a vision of Mary. She left her cloak to show her love for the poor. Juan Diego’s cloak is now hanging in the Basilica in Mexico City. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron of the Americas. If you want to read about Mary’s part in the coming of the savior, go to Luke’s gospel (Luke 1:39 - 42, 45 - 48).
On December 13, we remember St. Lucy. In Latin and Italian her name is Santa Lucia, which means “holy light.” Her feast is in Advent, when we think about light and darkness and remember that Jesus, our light, is coming. She may have been about 12 years old when she died for her faith. In some countries on this day one girl in each family is chosen as the “Lucy Queen.” She places a wreath of candles in her hair and wakes the family and serves them breakfast.
Please pray for the sick, especially Fr. Mink, Fr. Jasper’s mother, Remo Vallejo, Mr. Dodds who graduated from St. Ann School, and also for all the sick of our parish.
Let us not let Advent slip by without thinking of how God loves us, which reminds us how we should love others.
