Director's Newsletter

From the Director
We've had a very active start to the final term of this school year! Last week saw an assembly, the 4th grade Middle School Orientation, and the Chinatown field trip. It's wonderful to see everyone still smiling and giving it their very best even as the year is wrapping up.
I encourage everyone to get a good night sleep this week as MAP testing will take place Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This is a great chance for students to see just how much they've grown since sitting for the MAP tests at the beginning of the school year.
Please speak with your children about putting in their full effort on these exams. You can find more details about MAP testing within the newsletter.
I hope you enjoy the photos and videos of last week's events below.
Have a great weekend!
MAP Growth Testing
We want students to do their very best on these exams so that results are accurate representations of their current level of achievement. Teachers use the data from these exams to modify their instruction and better serve your children. If the data isn't reliable, it is more difficult for teachers to target the specific skills your child needs to develop.
Having a conversation with your child about the MAP test will go a long way in ensuring they are motivated to do their best.
If you have any questions or concerns about MAP testing, please feel free to make an appointment with me (Mr. Scoville)... or your child's English or Math teacher.

MS Music Updates from Ms. Van Liew
MS Summer Concert
The MS Summer Concert will be Tuesday, June 5th at 6:00pm in Dalton Hall. The concert will feature the CDS Beginning Band, General Music Performances from 5th, 6th, and 7th grade, and the CDS MS Choir. Please mark your calendar for this exciting event!
Beginning Band
This week, the 4th graders watched a skit and presentation about the CDS Beginning Band. Then, they tried out several instruments to find one that will be best suitable for them. For the 2018-19 school year, we will have two bands in the MS, a beginner band and an intermediate band. If your student is interested in learning a new instrument next school year, please contact Ms. Van Liew this Spring to get more information about Beginning Band! We would love to have many MS students involved in Band!
4th Grade Middle School Orientation Week
On Monday they heard from Mr. Scoville, and from a panel of MS students in grades 5 - 8. The 4th graders were able to ask a variety of questions and the panel did an excellent job providing these newcomers with practical advice.
On Tuesday and Wednesday students attended morning House with the 5th graders who later took the Grade 4s on a 20 minute tour of the MS/HS building. Students learned all about Dalton Cup, how to organize lockers, strategies for making it to class on time, how to check out library books, where to sit at lunch, what to do at Lab time, and much much more.
On Wednesday afternoon Mr. Van Liew, Ms. Fitz, and Mr. Tolley presented an Avengers themed Beginning Band Orientation! These awesome teachers staged a drama in search of the 6 infinity instruments! It was a whole lot of fun and students were able to learn about each instrument and try them out as well.
Our Student Council went the extra mile and held a special shout out edition of SCBS news offering tips for success in Middle School and interviewing an incoming 4th grader (see video clip below).
It was so much fun getting to know these kids and we're very excited to have them next year at CDS Middle School!
