The WAVA Wave
October 1, 2020
A Message from your Principal, Mrs. Susan Boyer
Happy October WAVA Families!
I hope that the school year is off to a great start for you! This year we are going to have a monthly theme that helps bring together the work that we are all doing. The theme for October is Teamwork. At WAVA, teamwork is a vital part of student success. Our team consists of the student, parent or family member, general education teacher and grade level advisor. Sometimes the team also includes other support teachers like our learning assistance teachers or our special education teachers. All the adults on the team are important and help students here at WAVA to be successful. Teamwork is also something that students exhibit and practice during class. Whether they are in the main room working together as part of a larger group or in a breakout room working with a peer—teamwork is a skill needed so that we accomplish our goal and support each other along the way.
During the month of September WAVA teachers have been busy getting to know you and your student. As teacher have been meeting with you and doing assessments in reading and math. These assessments are important to knowing what your student’s academic strengths and needs are. Teachers will use the assessment information to create classes that are specially targeted to meet the needs of their students. It is important that you and your student attend these classes, ask questions and be actively involved. Teachers are excited to be supporting students in live classes.
Now that school is in the full swing of things, you should be seeing weekly classes for Math and ELA on your weekly schedule. You may notice class connect schedules change as teachers are able to start differentiating instruction and break their classrooms into smaller groups. Be sure to attend required class connect and reach out to your teacher if you have questions about requirements. We love supporting our students.
This year we are excited to share that students will be starting in a new program, MAP Accelerator through Khan Academy. This program links student scores for NWEA MAP with Khan Academy to help students work in just the areas they need. More information regarding this are found at this link:

This program is brand new and all students will start in the next couple of weeks. Please wait for your teacher to share this information with you and ask you to activate your student account.
I hope you have a wonderful October!
