April 23rd

Feliç Diada de Sant Jordi!

Today is la Diada de Sant Jordi (St. George's Day) in Catalunya, which was Ms. Hanna's favorite holiday when she lived there. The Catalans celebrate by dressing in white and exchanging books and roses, as well as reenacting George's battle with the dragon and performing traditional Catalan dances.

Books are exchanged because William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes both died on April 23, 1616. This is also why UNESCO has recognized April 23rd as International Book Day. The roses are exchanged because, in the legend, a rose bush grew in the exact spot where the dragon's blood spilled.
