Maltby Messenger
May 6th Edition
~A message from our Principal~
Dear families,
Thank-you for all your warm wishes and thoughts to our teachers and staff! They truly felt appreciated! Students were excited to bring their teachers flowers and goodies and teachers were very thankful! Your support throughout this year has been incredible. We appreciate YOU!!!
Thank-you for following all our safety rules for car drop off and pick up. We appreciate you turning off your car while you are waiting, lining up on 212th, following the speed limit, and overall being incredibly patient! Our car line is getting very fast, thanks to you.😊
If you know of someone who has a kindergartener or someone who is planning on returning to Maltby, please encourage them to enroll this spring. Our staffing is tied to our enrollment. We are excited to welcome students in the fall!!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the people who take on that role! May your weekend be full of smiles! Have a great weekend!
Bonnie McKerney
Maltby celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week!! We are truly grateful for our wonderful teachers and the amount of dedication they continually give to students. This week we showered our Teachers with amazing treats and we hope they know just how much they are appreciated. If you haven't already, remember to thank a teacher!!
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. During this time, we take the time and recognize the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Former congressional staffer Jeanie Jew first approached representatives about the idea of designating a month to recognize Asian Pacific Americans, following the United States' bicentennial celebration in 1976. In June 1977, Rep. Frank Horton and Rep. Norman Y. Mineta, introduced a resolution to the U.S. House of Representatives to proclaim the first 10 days of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week. A month later, a similar bill was introduced in the Senate. President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution for the celebration on Oct. 5, 1978. In 1990, George H.W. Bush signed a bill passed by Congress to extend Asian American Heritage Week to a month. By 1992, May was officially designated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. May is significant to the AAPI community for two reasons. On May 7, 1843, the first Japanese immigrant arrived in the United States. More than 20 years later, on May 10, 1869, the first transcontinental railroad was completed, a project more than 20,000 Chinese workers participated in. During APAHM, communities celebrate with festivals, government-sponsored activities and educational activities for students.

Transitional Kindergarten 2021-2022
MSD Now Offering Transitional Kindergarten
Beginning in the fall of 2021, Monroe School District will be offering FREE Transitional Kindergarten (preschool) for children who are not currently in an early learning program, are age eligible (must be turning 5 years old between September 1, 2021 - August 31, 2022), and reside within the Monroe School District boundaries.
Our goal is to provide families with the opportunity to ensure their students begin their school careers ready for kindergarten. This program will provide an equitable start for students by offering a high quality early learning experience before they enter the traditional kindergarten classroom. Students will be screened in the late spring and summer and may qualify based on need.
Families interested in having their child participate in the Transitional Kindergarten program should complete an online application. Forms received by June 1, 2021, will receive priority. Learn more here.
Our Square store is now open! Purchase your Mustang merchandise
at https://maltbymustangs.square.site
Purchase online and merchandise will be delivered to the school and sent home with your student.
Idle Free Schools
Maltby Elementary has instituted a vehicle idling policy at the school. All persons operating vehicles at the school should adhere to the following guidelines:
- When waiting for students to be picked up, all engines should be shut off.
- All drivers should turn off engines when they arrive at school and when they expect to be parked for more than 10 seconds.
- If idling is necessary for temperature control, please restrict it to no more than 5 minutes.
We are implementing this policy to reduce the students' exposure to air toxins emitted in the exhaust of idling vehicles.
We encourage you to eliminate unnecessary idling not only at our school but anywhere you are waiting for more than 10 seconds. This simple change will improve the air our children breathe, as well as the air quality in our neighborhoods.
Thank you for your support...TURN YOUR KEY, BE IDLE FREE!!
In-Person Student REMINDERS...
End of Day Changes
- Please remember to contact the office if your student will have a change in their transportation for the day. You can call the office at: (360)804-3500 by 10:00 AM for Cohort A/2:00 PM for Cohort B or send a dated note with your student. Thank you!!
Daily Attestations
- If you are in need of blank daily attestation forms, please reach out to your child's teacher and we can arrange to send some home with your student. These attestations MUST be completed and brought to school everyday. We understand some families may not have access to a printer, and we are happy to help by sending copies home.
- Please make sure when you are filling out the daily attestations for students that you also date, sign and take their temperature, writing it in the top right corner fo the attestation form. School staff are required to double check temps on arrival. This will help speed up the process for curbside drop-off and bus loading.
Attendance Hotline:
- Just a reminder, we take attendance daily. If you know your child will be absent, please call our 24 hour attendance hotline at: (360)804-3501. If they are out ill, you can expect a call from our Health room for guidance regarding your student's return date. Thank YOU!!

- Remember that you can still request library books! Please let your teachers know if you'd like to put in a library request. Kindergarten/1st grade check out day is Tuesday, 2nd/3rd grade check out is Wednesday, and 4th/5th grade check out is Thursday.
- Looking ahead, Maltby will be hosting an online Scholastic Book Fair Friday, May 7th through Friday, May 14th. We will be sending home more information in April.

Hello Parents!
Please review the attached Illness Guidelines. We are currently ollowing this guidance from the WA Department of Health, Snohomish Health District and the Monroe School District. If your child becomes ill please contact the school regarding your child's illness symptom(s) as soon as possible. We will then review the symptoms with you and determine the pathway for your child to return to school. We are required to follow this very closely.
If children with illness symptoms arrive at school, parents will be contacted to pick their child up. We appreciate your understanding and willingness to work with us to keep children and staff healthy and safe. Thank-you!

MINDFULNESS...
For this week I wanted to come back to mindfulness, since it has been a while and share a few more activities for our practice.
Go for a Rainbow Walk
Rainbows after a rain is a quick cure for the gloomies, but you can search for rainbows any day of the week and in any weather.
The directions are simple: Take a walk and look for something red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Keep going through the colors until the end of the walk. Challenge yourself or each other to see how many rainbows you can find:)
Take a moment to notice what is around you and find:
Something that is blue
Something that is round
Something that is soft
Something that is small
Something that is bumpy

Free and Reduced Lunch and Discounted Internet
While we are currently offering FREE breakfast and lunch to all students, the funding for this program has been extended through June 2021. We know that each year many of our families qualify for free or reduced price meals and it is very important that families who may qualify fill out the annual application in order to receive free or reduced price meals for the remainder of the school year.
Meal Applications can be found on our website and can be submitted in-person or online here. Once you submit an application, you will receive a notice in the mail as to whether your child/children can receive free or reduced-price meals. If approved, your letter can help you access the K-12 Internet Access Program. Every eligible form that is not submitted means lost resources for your family and our schools.
If you qualify for free or reduced price meals, you may also be eligible to receive free internet service at your home. If you qualify for the free or reduced price meal program, you will receive a letter of approval. Once you have this letter, and if you are interested in the free Internet Access Program from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), please contact Brenda Hunt at: huntb@monroe.wednet.edu or 360.804.2500 (English) and Olga Flores at: floreso@monroe.wednet.edu or 360.804.2570 (Spanish) to receive the name of the internet provider and the offer/promo code to sign up for free internet. You can find more information on OSPI’s internet program here.
