St. Luke Weekly Memo
November 30 - December 7, 2017
The Connections Project is all about supporting positive mental health through building relationships. Dr. Jody Carrington reminds us how important it is to “light up” around our students, our colleagues and those we love. When we “light up” around someone by showing excitement when we see them and letting them know how important they are to us, we strengthen our connection.
Jody reminds us that, “Somebody's got to be crazy about that kid. That's number one. First, last and always.” ~ Urie Bronfenbrenner

Milk Program
We are making some changes to the milk program in the new year. Families will be asked to pre-order their child(ren)'s milk online in Parent Portal for the month of January. The reason for the change is because this helps us to more accurately order milk. As you know at home you can plan for the amount of milk your family will need based on your week, well we need to do the same for our family of 150 students. Due to difficulty in being able to accurately order milk we have wasted milk. Also this helps us move another form and exchange of money to an online format to help with accounting and reducing paper waste.
Beginning on December 1, you will be able to select which days in January you would like your child to receive milk (237mL) through an online form that is accessible in the same place as school fees - PowerSchool Parent Portal. The cost for each carton of milk will be $0.90 and you will be able to select white or chocolate milk. You will pay online based on the number of days you select. For the first time you will order for January only. The online order form will be open until December 22.
For the month of December students will use the remaining punches on their milk card. If you would like to order milk for your child for December please send $15 in an envelope with your child's name and 'Club Moo' on the front.
Advent Gifts
As we prepare our hearts for Christmas we want to continue to help families at Valeda House. As part of our Praise & Worship on Friday, December 1 we will be doing a reverse collection. Each student will receive an angel with a needed item written on it to bring in as a donation item. We would like to collect the items for two moms and a 2 year old boy by Friday, December 15 so we can deliver them to the families to help bring them joy at Christmas.
Silent Auction Baskets
Thank you to all the families who donated items for our silent auction baskets which will be up for bids this Saturday as part of Christmas in the Country to raise money for Valeda House.
WE Team News
The We Team will be hosting a Christmas Spirit Day on Wednesday, December 6 to celebrate the start of the Christmas season. All students are encouraged to dress in Christmas colors and wear Christmas attire (Santa hats, reindeer antlers, etc..). Students are encouraged to also bring a money donation to help support Valeda House.
School Fees
School fees have now been posted on PowerSchool Parent Portal. This year Elk Island Catholic Schools made an effort to reduce the cost of basic education for all students. The fees you will see are for student field trips, swimming, enhanced options and school based activities.
School fees can be paid online with Interac, VISA or Mastercard. You have the option to pay your school fees in installments through Create Payment Plan. If you require assistance with the online payment, please contact our school at 780-922-5920.

This year you have the opportunity to help a family in need by donating a nominal amount when paying your school fees. At the bottom of your child's fees you will see a button to donate. Any donations over $25 will receive a tax receipt. Thank you in advance for any money donated.
If you are experiencing financial hardship please review the fee waiver here or contact the principal, Mrs. Aoife Cahill, to discuss support.
The grade 5 & 6 students had a very successful volleyball season! Their final tournament is on Friday, December 1 at Holy Spirit. Thank you to coaches Colette and Kim for the hours they dedicated to coaching.
Healthy School Initiatives
All students had the opportunity to try Spinach & Kale and Beet whole grain chips today at lunch. Please ask your child what they thought of the taste test.
