This week, we wrapped up Week 2, which focused on the essential question: "How does nature challenge us?" A lot of our time was spent reading about severe weather, both in the Tall Tale "Thunder Rose" as well as expository texts about storm chasers and different types of severe weather, which we read in our guided reading groups. The students did a fantastic job on the Week 2 test! Next week, we will be back on the "usual" Reading Street 5-day schedule, beginning Week 3 (Island of the Blue Dolphin) on Monday and testing on Friday.

Next week, the downstairs 5th grade team will begin our "skill building" block rotation. This is a 30 minute daily block of time where students rotate between different classrooms in order to focus on specific literary skills.

You should have seen your child's Unit 1 math test come home early this week....the students did a great job for their first 5th grade test! This week we've been working through Unit 2, which focuses on Estimation and Computation. Please continue to try X-tra Math each night. Several students who have had difficulty logging into X-tra Math with their tablets have been able to get to the website using a home computer (if available). Thank you for your continued patience on our technical journey :)

This week the students finished presenting their "families", read some additional history about life in the 1760's in Colonial Boston, and started research for a group paper on a day in the life of one of their family members. Students have been working together to research the specific steps involved in completing daily work in the 1700's and will be creating a final copy to present to the other groups.

FIELD TRIP CHAPERONES!!! If anyone is interested in attending our Challenger field trip on Thursday, 10/16, please e-mail me by next Tuesday, 9/23. I am able to take up to 3 parents, so if there are more than three I will put the names in a hat and draw them at random :) We depart from the school at 8:30 a.m. and return at approximately 2:15 p.m.. Thanks in advance!

This week we reviewed the SWAP behavior routine for handling disrespectful behavior at Conley. This is the 3rd year of this program for most students, so it was fun to see the role-playing skits they used to demonstrate understanding of the process. A summary of the program is attached to this e-mail.

Enjoy the weather, and go HHS Red Raiders!!
