Lily Owens mother died when she was only 4 years old. (page 3) " The gun on the floor. The noise that exploded around us. This is what I know about myself. She was all that I ever wanted. And i took her away." (page 9)
T.Ray Owens was Lily's father who didn't like Lily, and he was abusive towards her. "I never got used to that powdered-glass feeling beneath my skin. They were swollen with hundreds of red welts, pinprick bruises that would grow into a blue stubble across my skin."(page 30) T.Ray didn't even care about her birthday. " I considered how to bring up the delicate matter of my birthday, something T.Ray had never paid attention to."(page 25)
Thinking about others
So when Rosaleen ( helped took care of lily) was at the hospital, Lily finally had enough with T.Ray. So lily bust Rosaleen out of the hospital and headed towards the Boatwrights house,
Rosaleen made Lily realize that there was love all around her. She made Lily realize that what T.Ray was doing to her was wrong and she was so much better at the Boatwright's house.
A new family
Everyone knows that having a motherly figure is always good to have around, but if you have four who truly love you is amazing and hard to find.
Lily didn't realized that while she was at the Boatwright's house she had love everywhere she was. When at first June Boatwright but when T.Ray found lily and slapped her so hard that she fell to the ground; June was there to make sure she was okay. Also August Boatwright took her in and made sure they had a place to stay and a family to rely on.
Sister of August and May Boatwright. Plays the cello and soon gets married.
Sister of June and August Boatwright. Has a wailing wall to help her deal with her feelings, because she fels what everyone feels
Theme-The theme of The Secret life of bees is mootherhood. The reason why is because while lily was settling into her new life lily finds motherly love where she didn't expect to find it.
Genre- The genre is Bildungsroman. Bildungsroman: a novel dealing with one person's formative years or spiritual education.
Setting- 1964 in two cities Sylvan and Tiburon, south Carolina
