Imagine * Inspire * Innovate
Mental Health for our kids
At our last school board meeting and talking with families, I have been hearing more and more about our students' mental health.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 6 kids aged two through 8 have a mental, behavior, or developmental disorder, and only about 20% of the kids receive care from a specialized mental health care provider (Link here).
Mental Health America (Link) shares that there are several things you can do to help.
- Nurture your child's confidence by avoiding sarcasm
- Praise them, be honest, and set realistic goals
- Play with your child and avoid electronics as a "baby sitter."
- Avoid bribery, nagging, and threats
- Criticize the behavior, not the child
- Talk about feelings
In the cold winter months without much peer interaction, it's important that we not only check Skyward for grades, but also check in on how things are going with our kids' social-emotional health as well.
Sincerely,
Mr. Pfenninger
Bangor West Principal

NWEA Testing
Winter Map Growth Reading and Math testing for all K-8 students will occur between January 18-29th. Testing will be proctored remotely, by each classroom teacher, as it was in the fall. MAP Growth helps teachers understand what students know today, so goals can be set to improve growth throughout the rest of the year. This is your chance to shine and show what you know! Please see the attached parent letter by clicking on the attachment below. Remember, please do not help with your child's testing other than any technology issues. Thank you!
Return date 2-1 with face-to-face learning
Our expectation is that schedules for dismissal, arrival, etc. will be the same as in the past and we will confirm that information once we approach our return date.
