MODULE 2 Introduction to Place Value Through Addition and Subtraction Within 20
Topic C: Strategies for Solving Change or Addend Unknown Problems
Topic C presents students with opportunities to solve varied add to with change unknown, take from with change unknown, put together with addend unknown, and take apart with addend unknown word problems. These situations give ample time for exploring strategies for finding an unknown. The module so far has focused on counting on and subtracting by decomposing and composing. These lessons open up the possibilities to include other Level 3 strategies (e.g., 12 – 3 = 12 – 2 – 1).2 Teachers can include or adjust such strategy use dependent on whether they feel it enhances understanding or rather undermines or overwhelms. The topic closes with a lesson to further solidify student understanding of the equal sign as it has been applied throughout the module. Students match equivalent expressions to construct true number sentences and explain their reasoning using words, pictures, and numbers (e.g., 12 – 7 = 3 + 2, 10 + 5 = 9 + 6)
Science
Unit 2: Forces and Motion
Guiding question:
How are pushes and pulls used in every day life?
In the Science lessons this week, students are planning an investigation using their understanding of forces to show how objects can change speed and direction.
We apply how pushes can change an object's direction in a game we like, Human Bumper Bowling. We work with our friends together to pushing the ball . We make the ball changing direction so we can work as a team to knock down the cups at the end of the loop. We like this game and we had lots of fun!
