Message From The Principal
Westbrook Families,
We are very much looking forward to our Family Literacy Night event here at Westbrook this Wednesday, March 8. The event will run from 5:30 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. and will include over twenty different teacher led sessions for families to attend. In addition to our sessions we will have our Book Fair open, a PTA sponsored photo booth, the Glenview Public Library will be issuing library cards and we will have snacks available for all! It is truly an exciting opportunity for the whole family! Please see a "sneak peak" to the sessions offered below! We look forward to seeing you!
The following week we will be hosting our first and second grade music performances here at Westbrook. We want to share a few details in advance.
All performances will be held in the front gym at Westbrook School.
Parking in our lot in a designated space may be challenging. We encourage you to carpool, and park in the empty lot across the street if needed.
Students may wear formal clothing for this performance.
Each performance will last about 40 minutes.
Each student will be able to have two guests attend their scheduled performance.
The safety and security of all of our students and staff at Westbrook are our priority, and we ask for your help by following District 34 safety and security protocols that require each guest to have their photo ID processed through our security system before being admitted into Westbrook.
To avoid lines in the front office and the greatest enjoyment of the show, we highly recommend that each guest who will attend the show stop by the main office or call the main office at 847-657-2491 to pre check-in with their photo ID. The best times to call the main office are during 9:00am-11:00am and 1:00pm-3:00pm daily.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Patrick

From Westbrook Literacy Coach - Mandy Freer
Here are some easy, helpful tips for reading with your child at home.
1. Be consistent.
2. Sit next to your child.
3. Point to each word as they read.
4. If they make a mistake, point to the part of the word they missed.
5. Read, model, read again.5 Essentials Survey
If you have a moment, please consider taking the 5 Essentials Survey. This survey is very important we kindly ask ALL parents to take this survey. We use this data regularly to make school and district based decisions. In order for us to see the parent results of the survey, we need twenty percent of parents to complete the survey. Today, we have thirteen percent of our parent population that has completed the survey. We need a minimum of twenty percent to receive our parent results. Thank you in advance for your time to complete this survey! More information below!
Please click here to take the parent survey.
Your input on this statewide survey -- given to parents of all students throughout the state of Illinois -- allows us to help us improve our schools for our students. As a parent, taking the survey will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness. The statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered for the Illinois State Board of Education by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
- Effective Leaders
- Collaborative Teachers
- Involved Families
- Supportive Environments
- Ambitious Instruction
Prior research in more than 400 schools shows that schools strong on at least 3 of the 5Essentials are 10 times more likely to improve student outcomes.
Please click here to take the parent survey. We ask that you take the survey for each school in which you have a child. We will be pleasantly persistent in the coming weeks as we hope to reach 100% participation before the survey closes on March 31, 2023. We plan to use the results of this year's survey to give us a clear picture of our schools' climate and culture. If at least 20% of parents participate in the survey, a parent supplement report will be generated and we will share these results with the community.
March 15 Parent Education Event
Join us on Wednesday, March 15 at 7pm in Springman's Wildcat Commons for the latest D34 ParentConnect event, Parenting Through Puberty: Changing Kids in a Changing World.
Do you wonder how to open the door for conversation with your child, who seems to be changing rapidly -- and responding with BIG emotions even more rapidly -- who communicates primarily through social media, and who seems to be evolving into someone you aren't sure you really know?
Do you need help finding ways to approach them so they actually listen?
You are not alone.
This presentation is designed to support parents in navigating some of the difficult topics of adolescence, including body changes, emerging sexuality, and increasing peer relationships. Parents will learn concrete strategies to support their child and practice skills to keep communication open.
Please Attend and Bring a Friend!
