National Read Across America Day

On March 1, 2013 the Denison High School Library Celebrated Read Across America Day. With a fun food theme, cookie giveaway with book checkout, and a drawing for free pizza, students were lining up to feed their faces and their minds!

Denison High School and Terrell Elementary are recent recipients of $2,500 literacy grants.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports childhood and adult literacy programs, GED programs, and provides relief funds for school libraries that have been devastated by disaster. Customers of Dollar General contribute to literacy programs by donating their change at donation canisters at checkout. In 2012, two local stores in Denison and Sherman ranked within the top 5 for overall highest donations out of 11,000 stores nationwide.

Typically recipients of Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants must apply to receive funding. However, due to Denison and Sherman being among the top donors nationwide, Dollar General wanted to reward our community's generosity by dispersing $20,000 in grants locally. Along with our Denison schools, other recipients of grants included Sherman High School, Fred Douglass Early Elementary, and Grayson Literacy Team.

YALSA's Teen Book Finder (funded by Dollar General)

is a free app that gives teens, parents, educators, and anyone who loves Young Adult literature access to YALSA's book awards and lists on their smartphone.
