Reading and Writing
Reading
Third graders are diving into their first non-fiction reading unit! In this unit, 3rd graders will learn how to rev-up their minds for non-fiction reading. A big focus of this unit is understanding main idea and supporting details. Students will be introduced to expository non-fiction as well as narrative non-fiction
Writing
During writing students will be finishing their persuasive writing and moving into Informational Writing. They will have the opportunity to show off their expertise on topics that interest them. Students will learn about structure and organization of informational texts.
Math

Science
3rd Graders rotate through these FOSS Science kits throughout the year.
Energy and Matter: Students learn about the transfer of energy from one form to another.
Sound: Students learn how sound is generated, how it is made louder and softer, higher and lower.
Water: Students learn the properties, changes, and interactions of water.
Social Studies

LMC - Library
We’ll be exploring books with themes of winter and snow, including fiction, nonfiction, and chapter books. We’re practicing finding different types of books in the library, and we’re becoming more familiar with how books are organized in different area.s.
Music
Technology
Third graders are continuing to work on proper keyboarding technique and learning all key placements on the keyboard.. Students will participate in Hour of Code, which is an introduction to computer science. It is designed to broaden participation in the field of computer science.
Art
Why learn about art from other cultures? How can art be functional? (Kumihimos)
PE
We are starting our Gymnastics unit. Which will include tumbling, balance and apparatus skills. We will also play Holiday games and create the annual “maze.”
Guidance
We are beginning our Empathy Unit. Students are learning how to identify feelings and understand perspectives. We are spending time talking about times you have conflicting feelings and how we can accept differences in our classroom and our school.
