EXCEL
ExCEL High School celebrates our Pirate of the Month for October, Jonathan Rainer. When selecting the student of the month, ExCEL teachers look for the student strives for success in all that they do and works to the best of their ability.
We recognize Jonathan for his significant progress in the classroom, his notable consideration towards others, and his outstanding attitude and disposition. Due to his personable nature, he is respected by his peers, his always willing to help attitude is appreciated by teachers and staff.
Jonathan first came to ExCEL during the 2020-2021 school year after initially trying virtual learning. He officially became an ExCEL student at the start of the 2021-2022 school year. Jonathan exemplifies what it means to be a student at ExCEL High School.
The fact that he is an outstanding student and has great work ethic is seen in his progress for September. During September alone, Jonathan completed 99 quizzes, 19 tests and completed three first semester courses!
Jonathan follows in the footsteps of his sister who also graduated from ExCEL. Jonathan decided to become an ExCEL student so that he could graduate early and enter the work force. We have no doubt he will do just that!
HIGH SCHOOL
The first nine weeks is nearly completed at Pine Tree High School. Friday, October 15 will see the end of one-quarter of the school year, and administration, faculty, staff and students are busy with all kinds of projects and work.
Class meetings started last week with freshmen and sophomores, and will continue this week with juniors and seniors. Classes get together in the theatre and receive important information for the school year. Also, there is a motivational speaker that gives the young people advice in a way they can understand.
Students took the PSAT this week to understand how the exam works and looking ahead to taking the SAT in the next year or so. Counselors administered the exams on Wednesday.
Friday night will be Senior Night at the stadium, and over 100 students will be honored before the game as they are showcased for their activities. Football, trainers, Precision, cheer, BUCS, yearbook, stadium audio visual and Culinary Arts seniors will be featured in pre-game festivities, along with several National Merit semi-finalists and other National Merit honorees. The football game is against Texas High but will see a host of people feted for their years of excellence.
Homecoming Court nominees have been chosen for the event on October 29, and those representatives will be announced in the coming week. Students will vote for King and Queen on October 27 from the four senior girls and four senior boys who were selected by their class members this week.
The fall production, Addams Family, is coming together for a November stage debut. Theater teacher Lisa Wright and faculty from choir, construction and several other areas are working long hours to get ready for the event.
BUC THE BULLIES is an anti-bullying program on the high school campus, sponsored by the BUCS, and they are having monthly events on the high school campus to stop bullying among students. The BUCS are also planning to visit other campuses in the near future to spread the program to those campuses as well. BUCS handed out plastic wristbands to all high school students recently and will do so for each school in the Pine Tree district. All administration, faculty, staff and students will receive a wristband and will hopefully wear them on a regular basis to show the community that PTISD stands against bullying at school.
The end of the nine weeks is here, and school is busier than ever for everyone. It won’t be long, according to the calendar, until the holidays are here and the school year will be half over. Buckle up Pirates, it is going to be a quick ride to Christmas.
PINE TREE JUNIOR HIGH
PTJH kicked off UIL Academics last week with a recruitment drive, and 191 Pirates signed up to join the team! Coaches and students will begin practice this month and look to improve on last year’s 2nd place finish by capturing the district championship.
One Act Play has started rehearsing in preparation for the District OAP competition that will be held in November.
The PTJH Cross Country team finished the year strong with a great showing at the district meet in Hallsville. Two girls placed in the top 20, while five boys placed in the top 10. The boys team completed a perfect season by winning the District Championship!
The football and volleyball teams have continued their progress and won a number of hard fought victories. #PTJHRocks
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Pine Tree Middle School students for the month for September are 5th graders Aiden Irby and Justine Calderon and 6th grade students, Bryk Bratton and Kyli Westby. These students are selected by the teachers and staff as being outstanding Pirates on our campus. Keep up the great work!
Mrs. Guerra’s 5th Grade Art Classes are ‘traveling artists’ moving across South America for Hispanic Heritage month. They are learning about traveling to many southern countries to celebrate the art in the areas. They have created beautiful folk art mirrors in Mexico, LLamas in Peru, and La Boca (homes) in Bueno Aires, Argentina. Students are learning about travel, cultures and artistic styles of the Hispanic cultures as they travel. To view the art, join Mrs. Olga Guerra’s Art Class on Facebook to see more great art by our Pine Tree Middle School students.
Our 6th grade students have started a guitar class with Mr. Smith. Students are learning beginner guitar songs and some talent is emerging. Savannah Story can play several songs and enjoys practicing with her friends.
PTMS will kick off Academic UIL on October 19th from 5 -7 p.m. Come sign up for your favorite category and watch for more information about practice times coming soon.
PARKWAY ELEMENTARY
Bookworm Vending Machine
Parkway bought the book machine from a company called Global Vending Group who believes that the combination of vending books and your own personalized reward system could bridge the gap between literacy and engagement.
Mrs. Keoun was inspired to bring this unique element to the Parkway Pack! So on September 28th, in a ribbon cutting ceremony our very own Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine was revealed. Students will earn tokens to use in our Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine by having good behavior, good grades, good attendance, and by meeting accelerated reader goals among many other things.
Pajama Day
Last week our little Pirates took the CBA’s in math and reading. They worked hard, showed respect, and showed off what they knew by using their strategies. With our students working hard, a great Pajama Day took place last week. Way to work hard!!!
Parade Time
With our CBA’s happening last week, students cheered each other on during parades each day. On Tuesday, our 1st and 2nd graders cheered on our 3rd and 4th graders. On Wednesday, the roles were reversed. Our 3rd and 4th graders cheered on our 1st and 2nd graders. Our Parkway Pack showed off their dance skills while parading around the hallways.
BIRCH ELEMENTARY
Ms. Jasper's 3rd-grade CEER class had the chance to defend their case in the 2021 Legendary Loch Ness Monster Debate! The students pulled research all week and presented it to a panel of judges that consisted of Mrs.Clugston, Mrs. Meitzen, and two 4th graders (and Loch Ness Debate veterans) Miranda Irvin, and Ian Gilliam!
October 2nd was National Custodian Day which recognizes the hard work that it takes by these dedicated individuals to keep our campus in tip-top shape.
Thank you to our AMAZING custodial staff at Birch First for tirelessly working to ensure our building stays sparkling and sanitized to help keep everyone safe. This special recognition was hosed by the Sunshine Committee and Birch First PTA.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Our PT family celebrated by serving our students, families and community at several locations throughout our city. Our grill masters prepared delicious hot dogs for everyone who attended. We love our Pine Tree community!
Our BFF earned a pajama day on October 7th for exceeding our fundraising goal of $40,000, as well as putting forth their best effort during testing the week of October 5th.
Kona Days at Birch First
Thank you Kona Ice of Longview for making our day extra sweet! In addition to Kona Ice and PJ day, a few of our Pirates also earned a trip to the BFF arcade. These students earned tickets from their teachers and other staff members for doing their best on their assessments this week. We held a drawing and these lucky kiddos were our winners
PRIMARY
It’s time for Big Kahuna! We kicked off our fundraiser with an assembly in the auditorium. For many of our little pirates, this was their first time experience and they did awesome! Students have been working to raise money for their school and earn prizes.
Our little pirates have been working on compound words for the past couple of weeks, and to celebrate we had a compound word day! Teachers and students dressed up as compound words either on their own or with a friend. We had pigtails, buttercup, baseball, and a class of butterflies.
October 8 the Primary campus hosted Bring Your Family to School Day-a special day where our little pirates could bring their parents to school and show them all the things they have been learning. Families were provided breakfast, and went to sessions taught by our teachers so they could learn how they can help their pirate be successful.
Participants experienced P.E., Music, and even recess! The day ended with a concert at the auditorium. Our little pirates are working hard and having fun doing it.
It’s a great day to be a pirate at Pine Tree Primary.
LESLY SUAREZ - PARENT LIASION
PT Parents!
During the month of October, students at Primary, Birch, and Parkway were sent home with an optional family project to complete. This project is centered around the Mexican holiday called Day of the Dead. The main intention of the project is for our students to have the opportunity to bond with you, their parents!
This activity is a chance for families to honor someone that is no longer with us and teach our children the value of passing those memories on to the next generation. This also gives families a healthy opportunity to talk about subjects that might be considered more sensitive. As mentioned earlier, the project is optional. We understand if you choose not to proceed with the project; however, if you do choose to participate, I want to thank you for taking the time to embrace this wonderful holiday known as Day of the Dead!
If you want to learn more about this Mexican holiday, please watch the following films: Coco and The Book of Life.
¡Hola, padres!
