Bear Bulletin
Maire newsletter: January 25th edition
Dear Maire Families
Winter is finally here. I want to take this time to remind everyone that we are outside as much as possible, even during the winter months. Please send your child to school properly dressed and ready for the cold and snow. For our younger students, please have your child(ren) practice at home getting their own gear on and off. This is a big step in building independence.
Finishing touches are being put on the new office and the process of moving our old office down has taken some time. We are excited that all guests will enter through the new double doors off the parking lot, entering into a secure vestibule, and then checking in with our office staff immediately. The safety and security of our building has vastly improved with this project. Signs will be posted once the new office is up and running.
Finally, as many of you are aware, the Board of Education has asked the Grosse Pointe Public School System administration to look into reconfiguring our district. This was a result of Board policy where enrollment numbers triggered a deeper look into our current offering. Rumors, misinformation, and speculation often run rampant quickly. Right now, a Blue Ribbon Committee made up of community and staff members, is working on analyzing what options are available. We all have an invested interest in what happens through this work, but I urge you to have patience and understanding that the committee is working hard to make the right decisions for our district. It is in their hands and out of our circle of control. Whatever change does come, the 2020-2021 school year would be the earliest that any changes would be implemented. At Maire, we will continue to focus on each kid, each and every day.
Sincerely,
Ryan Francis,
Principal

Maire Messages from the Office:
- Maire students go out for recess if the weather is above ZERO degrees.
- Please consider sending extra socks and pants with your child during these cold and slushy months. In the event your child gets wet while playing outside, this prevents us from having to call home.
Please label all of your child's outerwear!
Please be sure to call our Attendance Line at 432-4301 with all absences/late arrivals by 8:45 a.m. This is a dedicated line and is available 24 hours/7 days a week. If you know of a future absence (trip, appointment, etc.) please let the office know with a phone call or note as soon as possible.
Winter Colds & Flu -Let's stay healthy!
What’s the easiest thing you can do to stay healthy? Wash your hands!
Proper Hand Washing Procedure
- Wet hands with warm water and apply soap. Vigorously rub hands during washing for at least 20 seconds with special attention paid to the backs of the hands, wrists, between the fingers and under the fingernails.
- Rinse hands well.
- Completely dry hands with a single-use towel or a warm air dryer.
Times for Proper Hand Washing
Warm water and non-antibacterial soap is what children should use regularly:
- after going outside
- before preparing/cooking food
- before and after eating
- after using the bathroom

Important Weather Info
SCHOOL CLOSING INFORMATION
When deciding whether to close schools here are some of the factors that are taken into consideration:
- Amount and type of snow
- When the snow falls, and when the snowfall is expected to end
- Ability to clear parking lots and sidewalks around school
- Freezing rain and the effect on roads, power lines and tree limbs
Parents/guardians always have the right to keep their children at home if they do not believe they should be going to school because of weather conditions.
Do the students stay in for recess if it is cold outside?
Students go out twice per day as long as the wind chill is above 0 degrees. Please come dressed for the weather.
