QUOTE FOR THE PRINCIPAL'S JOURNEY
About 30 educators and community stakeholders met on Tuesday to begin a new initiative called The Missouri Teacher Table. The purpose of this effort is to address the recruitment and retention of teachers. There are similar Teacher Table initiatives underway in other states. We applaud Commissioner Vandeven for elevating the voice of teachers in our state. According to the data, here is a list of what matters to teachers.
- Supportive leadership
- Time for teachers to collaborate
- Access to high-quality teaching resources
- Clean and safe building conditions
- Strong professional development
- Higher salaries
- Collegial work environment
- Opportunities for alternate careers in the classroom

VETERANS DAY IS COMING UP
As you plan your annual Veterans Day assemblies and programs, I have included a link to the
Veterans Day Photo Gallery. Use the gallery to download the official 2019 photo for your announcements, Powerpoints, etc. This annual remembrance is an excellent opportunity for you to lead your community as you honor those who have served our nation while at the same time, instill patriotism and love of country in our youth.
Missouri Teacher Table Initiative
I had the opportunity to attend the first Missouri Teacher Table Initiative on Tuesday of this week in Jefferson City. We applaud Commissioner Vandeven for elevating the voice of teachers in our state as we address teacher recruitment and retention.
NEW EVIDENCE FOR PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING
This article from Forbes Magazine caught my eye this week. As you champion efforts in your school for rigor and relevant teaching and learning, you might find this article useful. The author is Dr. Michael Nietzel, President Emeritus of Missouri State University.
ACT Data
Ok, high school principals and assistant principals, it is time to view the Profile Report of your high school. As a former high school principal, I anticipated this report for months and found it to be very helpful as we gauged progress toward meeting our goals. Take time to see what the data says about your school. I have included several useful links below of the ACT Report just released a few days ago.
The data are based on nearly 1.8 million 2019 graduates around the U.S.—52 percent of the graduating class—who took the ACT® test during high school. The report includes ACT score results from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, including 13 states that required all students to take the ACT as part of their statewide testing programs and another six states that funded ACT testing on an optional basis. It also includes the results from more than 1,100 individual school districts across the country that administered the ACT to all students.
Whether you are aspiring, emerging, developing, or transformational, wherever you are on the “Principal’s Journey," it is a “matter of principal(ple).” Clark Mershon
School Wellness Symposium NOVEMBER 17-18 IN COLUMBIA, MISSOURI
Please continue to share with your colleagues the opportunities the School Wellness Symposium has to offer as we have conversations around challenging issues facing our schools and communities. We have too many anxious minds who are in our care. We hope that as a result of this symposium, attendees will come away with strategies to help bring calm to their setting. Remember, we are "better together." Please consider attending or, better yet, send a team of educators from your school or district. You might be interested to know that ATTENDEES can earn one hour of graduate credit from Lindenwood University through their participation in this conference.

ABOUT 100,000 MISSOURI CHILDREN HAVE LOST MEDICAID COVERAGE
"Kids who have health coverage do better in school and have better health, educational, and economic outcomes as adults. Unfortunately, a new report from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families shows that an estimated 83,000 Missouri children were uninsured in 2018, an increase of approximately 17 percent since 2016," The Missouri Finish Line Collaborative.
Many of our Missouri students in our schools have lost Medicaid and CHIP coverage. MoASSP will have a session devoted to how schools can leverage Medicaid dollars during the School Wellness Symposium on November 17-18.
"Missouri is also among the dwindling number of states that have not expanded Medicaid. States that have not expanded Medicaid experienced a three times greater increase in their rate of uninsured children than states that have accepted federal funding to expand Medicaid." The Missouri Finish Line Collaborative includes Kids Win Missouri, the Missouri Budget Project, and the Missouri Coalition of Children's Agencies. See the link below for the full Georgetown University report.
Building Level Administrator Assessments for Aspiring Administrators
We have many aspiring principals who subscribe to MoASSP. During the Missouri Professors Educational Administration Fall Conference last Friday, we asked the question regarding support materials for aspiring principals seeking certification. We have included two helpful links below as you study for the test. For those of you in the Kansas City area, there is an Aspiring Administrators Conference next Wednesday, November 6, at Van Horn High School sponsored by the GKCMPA.
MICRO-CREDENTIALS PILOT
MoASSP & OTHER STATE PRINCIPAL ASSOCIATIONS PARTNER WITH ILLINOIS
We (Illinois Principals Association, MoASSP, and other state associations) are now seeking participants to help us pilot, free of charge, our two latest micro-credentials: (1) Leading Vision and Mission and (2) Driving Vision and Mission. Interested individuals are asked to register for one of 4 informational virtual meetings, as described on the attached flyer.
Micro-credentials provide evidence of crucial educational leadership skills and provide a way for you to share your skill validation with others. There are currently eight micro-credentials available for purchase through Ed Leaders Network with another dozen presently in the writing stage and more than 30 in the developmental stages.
MoASSP, MAESP, and DESE have been working with Illinois for the past couple of years to provide this new opportunity to help support learning for administrators. For more information, click on the Vision and Mission Pilot Flyer pdf below.

We are sending this information to all schools through our Communications Department.
