The Four R's of October
Regulate, Relate, Reason & ROar
Welcome Back, RO!
Hello RO,
Welcome back to our monthly newsletter, The Four R's. Now that we are a month into school, getting to know our students better, and into our regular routines, we think it is time for some tips, tricks, and ideas! In addition to the link on the ROar, we will also be leaving a printed copy in your mailboxes for your viewing pleasure. If you have any questions or any topics you would like to see incorporated in next month's newsletter, let us know.

This Month's Supportive Suggestion: The Cognitive Shift
You’ve seen them or had them, the criers. The student who shows up to class in the morning in tears and cannot tell you what is wrong! We’ve had a lot of them this year. A cognitive shift is when a person undergoes a new experience. More simply, change the thought process. Some of us are conditioned to ask a student what is wrong when they are crying, and most of the time that works beautifully; however in the morning, at arrival, it doesn’t matter. The student may be upset at nothing other than they walked into school that morning. The “why” can be figured out later or, often, is forgotten once the morning routine is underway. When you see a crier, welcome them to the classroom, maybe help them unpack while you tell them about your weekend, what you had for breakfast, how your morning went, move into what the plan is for the day and slowly start to get the student on routine. Often the tears will stop, maybe a friend will have joined at that point, and the day has begun.
