February 2020

Our Little Chiefs are soaring!!

Our students have been completing the winter FAST screening. This assessment helps us determine how well our students are growing. We've been astounded by how much they've grown! There are still a handful of students to screen in each grade level, but the results so far go as follows:

  • As a building, our reading goal was to increase the percentage of proficient students by 10% by the end of year. From fall to winter, our percentage of proficient student has actually increased by 20%, which means approximately 110 more students are now meeting benchmarks that were not in the fall.
  • Additionally, 79% of our students are making typical or aggressive growth. They are growing at a tremendous rate!!!
  • MATH
  • We've implemented a few new strategies in teaching math. As a building, our goal was to increase to percent of proficient students by 8% by the end of the year. From fall to winter, our percentage of proficient students has increased by 5%.
  • Additionally, 66% of our students are making typical or aggressive growth.
  • We are on pace to make our goal by the end of they year.

These students are crushing it. We are so proud of our Little Chiefs and our staff!!!

Staying Healthy!!

We have had a lot of illnesses rolling through the building in recent weeks. We've made daily reminders to students to wash their hands regularly with soap and warm water through our morning announcements. You can help keep our staff and students healthy by making sure your students are bathing regularly and wearing clean clothes to school. If your student is experiencing fevers, vomiting, or diarrhea please keep them at home. We want to restrict the spread of illnesses as much as possible so everyone is at full strength to learn and be successful! Thank you!!

FAST testing

The FAST screening window opens on January 13th and closes on February 7th. That means all of our students will be screened one-on one with their teacher on their reading and math growth. We are looking forward to seeing how much our Little Chiefs have grown over the first half of the year!! To ensure that our students are well prepared and able to give their best performance, we ask parents to make sure their student(s):
  • are well-rested
  • have eaten breakfast
  • arrive to school on time
  • know that they are loved and you are proud of them

They're going to do GREAT!!!

Casey's Cash for Classrooms

Dear Parents,

We’re excited to share that our school is participating in Cash for Classrooms, part of Casey’s Rewards. This opens up Hawthorne Elementary to new funding opportunities to help improve learning environments for students.

The best part? Donations don’t come out of your own pocket. When you buy from Casey’s and use their rewards program you can simply turn your points into a donation to our school. Help Hawthorne Elementary make the most of this program and learn more at Caseys.com/schools.
