Zoohackathon Competition
Civic Hackers Cracking Down on illegal Souvenirs
Alicia Johal and Shannon Chamberlin (both middle school science teachers in SUHSD) participated and were finalists in the Zoohackathon Competition this past Fall. They, along with 3 other team members, worked on creating an app that will arm tourists with the information they need to make informed – and legal – shopping decisions on holiday.

Chula Vista High School Spartan Physics/Engineering Force WINS 2017 Northrop Grumman Innovation Challenge
This year’s project was “SHADE – Solar Heat-Shield Automatic Deployable Experiment.”

UCSD researchers bring science of music to Southwest Middle School
UCSD researchers Victor Minces and Alexander Khalil spent three weeks at Southwest Middle teaching the science of music to 300! 8th grade students. In their program, named Listening to Waves, the students created electronic music, used software to analyze sound, and created musical instruments. By performing these activities, the students were introduced to basic concepts in sound engineering, the physics of waves, and the principles of auditory perception.

- Two teams from our District VEX League made it all the way to the VEX Worlds Championship; San Ysidro High School & Rancho Del Rey Middle School.
- Two SUHSD High School FIRST teams also earned their participation to FIRST Championship; Eastlake High School & Southwest High School.

The FIRST Championship presented by Qualcomm® Incorporated is the culmination of the season’s FIRST programs, bringing together tens of thousands of students of all ages for the ultimate celebration of science and technology.
30,000 students - 1,394 robotics teams - From 39+ countries
2017 FIRST Championships were held at Houston, Texas, U.S. on April 19-22, 2017 and in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. on April 26-29, 2017.

2017 Codechella: Coding Competition at SDCC on June 3rd
Junior Achievement is proud to present the 2017 Codechella: Coding Competition in collaboration with California Career Pathways Trust (CCPT), Regional Pathways (SB1070 grant), Doing What Matters, and San Diego Unified School District partners.
Codechella will take place on Saturday, June 3rd at San Diego City College, from 8:30am-12:30pm. This is a regional event for middle and high school students to participate in a coding competition. They will be working in teams of two to code either a dancing Aldebaran Nao Robot or a maze racing Sphero! Registration deadline May 26th.

Now in its third year, UC San Diego’s Mentor Assistance Program (MAP) is a campus-wide program, which will engage high school students in a mentoring relationship with an expert from a vast array of disciplines, from History, Marine Physical Sciences and Nanoengineering to Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Athletics and Computer Science
