Zoohackathon Competition

Civic Hackers Cracking Down on illegal Souvenirs

Alicia Johal and Shannon Chamberlin (both middle school science teachers in SUHSD) participated and were finalists in the Zoohackathon Competition this past Fall. They, along with 3 other team members, worked on creating an app that will arm tourists with the information they need to make informed – and legal – shopping decisions on holiday.

2017 California State Science Fair

The 66th annual California State Science Fair was held in the California Science Center on April 24-25, 2017. This year there were 927 participants from 400 schools throughout the State who presented 814 projects.


Arlyn Fabian and Haley Fernandez, students from Rancho Del Rey Middle School represented our district and our county! Their project: "Fog Catchers"

Chula Vista High School Spartan Physics/Engineering Force WINS 2017 Northrop Grumman Innovation Challenge

On Saturday, April 29, 8 members of the Spartan Physics/Engineering Force traveled to Rancho Bernardo to compete for their fifth time against high schools from San Diego and Riverside Counties in the annual Northrop Grumman High School Innovation Challenge.

This year’s project was “SHADE – Solar Heat-Shield Automatic Deployable Experiment.”

For the second year-in a row- Spartan Physics/Engineering WINS the challenge.

UCSD researchers bring science of music to Southwest Middle School

UCSD researchers Victor Minces and Alexander Khalil spent three weeks at Southwest Middle teaching the science of music to 300! 8th grade students. In their program, named Listening to Waves, the students created electronic music, used software to analyze sound, and created musical instruments. By performing these activities, the students were introduced to basic concepts in sound engineering, the physics of waves, and the principles of auditory perception.

  • Two teams from our District VEX League made it all the way to the VEX Worlds Championship; San Ysidro High School & Rancho Del Rey Middle School.


  • Two SUHSD High School FIRST teams also earned their participation to FIRST Championship; Eastlake High School & Southwest High School.

2017 FIRST Robotics Championship

The FIRST Championship presented by Qualcomm® Incorporated is the culmination of the season’s FIRST programs, bringing together tens of thousands of students of all ages for the ultimate celebration of science and technology.

2017 FIRST Championships were held at Houston, Texas, U.S. on April 19-22, 2017 and in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. on April 26-29, 2017.

FRC Championships Houston: Hopper Division – Seeded 53rd; Started qualifications 0-6 due to robot problems, but finished with 4 straight wins.

"After four days of competition, PiRTZ ranked 50 overall, 14 in autonomous, and 34 in individual scoring. Our team represented by Xavier Serena won the "2017 FIRST World Championship Dean’s List Award" (first one in the list), an award which recognizes leadership and the advocacy of FIRST. Sweetwater\MakerPlace Program: Sweetwater High School

2017 Sweetwater\MakerPlace Program
Sweetwater Union HSD partnered with MakerPlace to bring the MAKER MOVEMENT to our high school students. Students from Sweetwater High School worked in teams to design, prototype, and MAKE their own projects. They were guided & mentored by MakerPlace makers and SUH teachers.

Sweetwater Union HSD Summer Cyber Security Camp [June 12-16]

Sweetwater Union HSD will host an AFA Summer CyberCamp on the week of June 12-16, 2017. The CyberCamp will teach students important skills in cyber safety and cybersecurity. It will include topics like online safety, cyber ethics, cybersecurity principles, windows, linux, unbuntu, a mini-cyberpatriot competition, among others.

UCSD Women in Computing Girl's Day Out [May 13th]

Girls’ Days Out by UC-San Diego’s presented by the Women In Computing Club (WIC) will take place on Saturday, May 13th, 2016 from 9:30 am - 2:30 pm at the University of California, San Diego campus.


We are happy to invite you to our biggest event of the year where high school girls come to campus to find out more about what it's like to be in the field of engineering.

2017 Codechella: Coding Competition at SDCC on June 3rd

Junior Achievement is proud to present the 2017 Codechella: Coding Competition in collaboration with California Career Pathways Trust (CCPT), Regional Pathways (SB1070 grant), Doing What Matters, and San Diego Unified School District partners.


Codechella will take place on Saturday, June 3rd at San Diego City College, from 8:30am-12:30pm. This is a regional event for middle and high school students to participate in a coding competition. They will be working in teams of two to code either a dancing Aldebaran Nao Robot or a maze racing Sphero! Registration deadline May 26th.

UCSD MAP Spring Recruitment

Now in its third year, UC San Diego’s Mentor Assistance Program (MAP) is a campus-wide program, which will engage high school students in a mentoring relationship with an expert from a vast array of disciplines, from History, Marine Physical Sciences and Nanoengineering to Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Athletics and Computer Science
