From the Principal
The Catholic Church dedicates the month of February to the Holy Family. The examples of the Holy Family demonstrate a model for all families. We recognize that parents are the primary educators of their children. Your Regina family works together with you to educate your children and reinforce the Catholic values taught at home.
I like this prayer to the Holy Family because we pray to each member of the holy Family individually and then to the entire family.
May the Holy Family be with you,
JESUS, Son of God and Son of Mary, bless our family. Graciously inspire in us the unity, peace, and mutual love that you found in your own family in the little town of Nazareth.

Tickets for Regina's Production of The Little Mermaid On Sale Now
Regina High School Theatre Department Presents: Disney's The Little Mermaid. Performances will be March 1-3 at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA). Show times are:
Friday at 7:00 pm
Saturday at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Sunday at 2:00 pm.
Call the CCPA Box Office (248-9370) or order tickets online (for an additional fee) at coralvillearts.org. Box Office hours are Tuesday through Friday noon - 4 pm (and 1 hour prior to ticketed events).

Little Mermaid Meet-and-Greet
When: Friday, February 22nd: 6:30-8:00 pm
Where: Elementary Gym
What: Meet-and-Greet with the characters from The Little Mermaid.
Have your child's photo taken with the show set and with characters from the show. We will also have art activities and snacks. The cast will perform some of the songs from the show. The cost is $5 per child.

National Youth Science Camp
As announced by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, applications are now being accepted from high school seniors in the class of 2019 to represent Iowa at the 2019 National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp). Two students from each state, Washington, D.C, and 8 countries will attend the all-expenses-paid program which is held from June 27 through July 20, 2019. The NYSCamp is a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program hosted in the eastern mountains of West Virginia. Students will have an opportunity to conduct research at the nearby Green Bank Observatory and to explore the surrounding Monongahela National Forest through backpacking, mountain biking, caving, rock-climbing, and kayaking.
Eligible students must have graduated high school from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019. For more information about the program, please see http://www.nyscamp.org. Applications must be submitted online at http://apply.nyscamp.org by 6 PM EST on February 28, 2019.

Camp Kesem Application
Camp Kesem applications are now open for new families to register! Instructions are included at the bottom of this email for how to do so. We understand this process can be confusing when doing it for the first time, so please don't hesitate to ask for help if needed! We can't wait to meet all of our new campers!

Regina will host a Math League competition on Saturday, 3/9. There are 3 divisions: Elementary (Grades 3-6), Junior High, and High School. Check-in for the Elementary and Junior High competitions is at 8 am with competition beginning at 8:30 am and the last round and awards at approximately 11:30 am. Check-in for the High School competition is a 2 pm with competition beginning at 2:30 pm and awards at approximately 6 pm.

Math Department Updates
Math 7 is studying ratios, proportions, and percents.
In Pre-Algebra, the students have been working on slope-intercept form. We have figured out the y-intercept and the slope in y=mx+b functions. We had a mini project and created stained glass on paper using different linear functions given. Some of the stained glass pictures are given. We will continue with linear functions for the next week or so. Our next unit will be scientific notation.
Lines, lines, everywhere lines in Algebra 1 as we study equations and circumstances that result in functions making lines.
Algebra 2 is finally taking a quiz over the beginning of Chapter 5 and then will start polynomial long division and synthetic division (one of Mrs. Hill's favorite topics).
AP Stats is getting a start on Semester 2. They're trying to work ahead of the assigned schedule so that they'll have time to take practice tests before the AP Exam.
High School Calculus is getting ready for a quiz over some really important topics: product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule.
AP Calculus AB is finishing up learning the first and second derivative tests. Then, we'll move on to curve sketching and optimization before moving on to the third big topic in Calculus - Integration.
AP Calculus BC is getting ready to test over Parametric and Polar equations. We'll do a quick unit on Vectors and then move on to the last new topic - Sequences and Series.
ALEKS students have received their semester goals and are working to meet their weekly goals.
News from Mr. McFerren
Lobodiak. The editors took as the title for this year's volume: "Words Become Reality." This was from a line in the poem by Grant Lenz. You can find this volume of literary works here: http://www.hotdishmagazine.com/words-become-reality-2019.html. Just click on the students' names to read their poems Note: Most of the poems by our students were sonnets, villanelles, or sestinas. Each of these forms must follow rigid rules regarding meter, rhyme and repetition. It takes disciplined effort and a great deal of creativity to write these types of poems as well as our students have.

Throughout December and early January, the 7th graders participated in the National Geography Bee. First, all 7th graders participated a preliminary round which consisted of questions based on state, national, and world geography. The qualifying students then took a quiz in which determined the top ten students who then participated in a final round on January 7th, 2019. I was so very proud of all of the participating students and they answered some really difficult questions! Congratulations to the following students: Jozsef Polyak (1st place), Thomas Shey (2nd place), and Ian Udell (3rd place).
8th grade U.S. History: The 8th graders worked on a project about the Lewis & Clark journey,
they worked with Mrs Belknap using the green screen. The students researched a spot on the trail, and found a background of the trail using google maps and presented the information in front of the background. We are studying inventors, students worked in groups using Little Bits kits to create something with the parts available to them.
In U.S. History we are about to enter the World War II era. We have had quite the journey this year and as the weather warms up the spring will be filled with the Cold War, 1950s, 1960s, Vietnam, and the 1980s to the present.
In AP Psychology we will be taking our development unit test and then we only have four units to go before we begin reviewing for the AP Exam. The date is May 9th and I am positive that the students will do a fantastic job. Make sure they are reviewing vocabulary!
In Psychology class we have just begun our journey by taking a look at the history of psychology and we will begin preparing for our unit 1 test this week. In the coming weeks we will be exploring the nervous system, the brain, sleep and dreams, learning, classical and operant conditioning, and the effects of drugs and alcohol.
In Abnormal Psychology we have taken a look at the history and the four D’s of abnormal behavior. Now we begin our journey into the types of disorders, how they appear, and how they are diagnosed. We will have plenty of research that we will be doing as well as reading several case studies.
We learned how talk about daily schedules, ask and tell time, say what we have and have to do, and how to use expressions of frequency. We also learned how to conjugate the verb "tener" (to have) and -ar verbs. We reviewed after-school activities and days of the week. In addition, we learned about the Jardín Prinicpal in San Miguel de Allende, the ruins of Chichén Itzá, and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
We have started working with the past tense of AR verbs. Students are also doing a Spanish Culture Unit. We are concentrating on geography, music, and interesting facts about the 21 countries where Spanish is the official language. This semester students will work on creating skits using vocabularies we have studied and will also work on our writing skills and also learn the past tense of ER and IR verbs.
We continued with our in-depth review of what was learned in levels I and II, as well as putting into practice verb tenses such as present, preterit, imperfect, future, present progressive, reflexive forms and present and past perfect tenses.
Right now, students are doing presentations on a chosen Spanish speaking country and sharing with the class from geographical facts to current events. These presentations are in Spanish. In the near future, we will work with the Imperative form (commands) as well as vocabulary on rooms of a house and chores. We will also work on paragraph writing skills as well as listening comprehension exercises.
For both Spanish II and III our goal is to learn well language structures and be able to successfully use them when communicating in the target language.
We learned vocabulary relating to art and paintings, dance, literature, and music. We also learned how to identify and specify using demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, how to request clarification using "qué" and "cuál," and how to express relationships using the relative pronouns "que" and "quien(es)."
Updates from the Science Department
The Earth and Space Science students are learning about plate tectonics. This high school class is presenting a PPT presentation on how plates interact with each other. This presentation comes complete with demonstrations and lots of background information. The assessment will involve play dough!
Introduction to Engineering: Students just finished making their puzzle cube models and are now fully developing pieces within Autodesk Inventor using CAD Modeling. Students will be learning all of the features within Autodesk inventor over the next couple of months and then applying that information to reverse engineer a piece of their choice.
8th Grade Science: We have just started are Kinematic unit. Students were recently introduced to unit conversion during speed, velocity, and acceleration problems. Students will be introduced to the relationship between slope and how slope is applied to speed, velocity, and acceleration. Students will then be required to make a story that makes sense mathematically and spatially.
Anatomy and Physiology: Students are currently learning about muscles and muscles contractions. Students are learning a set group of muscles and where those muscles are attached (insertion and origin points) as well how the nervous system has an impact on these muscles. We will be graphing how the muscle reacts work overtime. We will be lifting objects and hoping our muscles develop fatigue. Throughout this process, students will graph how many times they were able to lift a specific amount of mass over a given time period.
