State Champions! The Champion Chargers One-Act Play won the 2022 Class 5-A State Championship! The Chargers Theatre troupe performed the play He Who Gets Slapped, and beat out seven other schools at the state meet to win the title, in their first-ever appearance at the State competition. The show He Who Gets Slapped was written in 1915 and examines a band of circus performers whose lives are interrupted when a stranger with a mysterious past joins their ranks. Offering a glimpse at the action behind-the-scenes of a circus from days gone by, this vintage spectacle delights audiences with acrobatics, dance, live music, and clown lazzi while evoking the glamour, sparkle, and shadows of the Big Top. Weston Eades was recognized as Best Performer of the day, and earned the prestigious Samuel French Award, for his performance as “He.” | State Art QualifiersBoerne and Champion had a total of four State Art Qualifiers. From Boerne High School Mykala Jones and Brayden Garder, and from Champion High School Caden Jensen and Mia Shayesteh. Mikayla, Brayden, and Caden all earned the highest rating of a four, and gold medals for their artwork. Mykala also received the $1,000 “Dr. Jim Henderson Memorial Scholarship”. In the VASE competition, over 31,000 student art pieces were submitted statewide, with around 900 earning gold medals as the top scorers across the state. Compensation Plan Approved
The Board approved the 2022-23 employee compensation plan at Monday’s meeting.
The approved compensation plan features increased pay grades aligned to market values for all positions in the district. Starting pay for a first-year teacher will increase to $52,250. Teachers, nurses, and librarians will receive a 3.5% increase as part of the annual step equating to $2,020 more per year. Paraprofessional and professional employees will receive 3.5% of their new pay grade midpoint. Auxiliary employees were granted emergency pay during the spring in the amount of $2.00 per hour. The pay differential will become permanent to their pay for 22-23, equating to a 6.5% to 12.0% of the midpoint increase for these employees. Guest Teachers will also maintain the emergency pay rates implemented in the spring.
In addition, TRS health insurance premiums have been significantly reduced for the 22-23 plan year. The district will continue contributing at the current rate based on the plan election. Savings directly to employees will range from $852 to $4,068 a year. The average insurance cost savings for BISD employees will be $1,548.
Together, the BISD salary increase and health insurance premium decrease will mean our employees will see an average of 6.2% total increase as take home for 2022-2023.
