A Note from Mrs. Nanney

As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, I am daily reminded of how thankful I am of the kind, caring, and respectful students of Westwood Elementary. Every day students arrive happy, positive and eager to learn. They are well-behaved and very engaged in the classroom. Each day I have a PILE of Gotch slips for students who are respectful, responsible and ready to learn. My heart swells with pride; I could not ask for better students than the children attending Westwood. Thank you so much to the families who support us every day and contribute to the success of our students.

Dates to Remember

  • Thursday, November 12: PTO meeting via Zoom
  • Wednesday, November 25-Friday, November 27: Thanksgiving Break

School Counselor Scoop

Hello Students and Families!

In our Second Step Guidance Lessons, we finished with our Bullying Prevention Lessons and are now focusing on how to be kind, respectful and speak up for ourselves in all situations and as we continually build a positive and caring atmosphere at Westwood! I am so proud of how students have been practicing the listening skills we learned while supporting the thoughts and feelings of their classmates!

I have also begun implementing weekly morning meeting groups and lunch bunch opportunities to provide extra social support and friendship building for both our in person and virtual learners. Please feel free to contact me if you ever have questions or concerns.

It has been beaautiful week and hope that you are taking advantage of the nice weather this weekend!

Take care and be safe,

Meg Cunningham

End of the Day and Early Release Notifications

We need to know the daily plan for dismissal for your child. To let us know where your child is going home at the day's end, please complete either a DAY PASS or PERMANENT PASS in the attached form by 9:00am. Additionally, there is an option for an EARLY RELEASE should you need to pick up your child by 3:00 p.m. Please complete all forms by 9:00 am daily for same day transportation changes.

Link for the transportation form: https://forms.gle/3Q9hTC78JhaJUZSR8

Please bookmark the form for easy reference. No paper notes will be accepted we are going all electronic. Thanks for your help in this process.

Given COVID-19, we are trying to make more of our everyday processes electronic and more efficient. These will replace the previous paper form we had.

Please note that there is an option for Lindsey students to ride a bus to Westwood so that parents can pick up all of their elementary-aged students at one location.

Should you have any questions about your child's bus route, please contact Cheryl Fowler at cheryl.fowler@westg.org or 440-729-0026.

PTO NEWS

Kudos to those individuals who helped at the Book Fair this past week! Thanks to you, we were able to have a safe and successful shopping opportunity for our young readers. Special thanks to Erin Stevenson for chairing the event this year and to Angela Farmer, former Book Fair chairperson, who willingly showed Erin the ropes. You ladies rock! There's still time to shop online through November 7th and earn our school 25% in rewards. https://shop.scholastic.com/parent-ecommerce/as-seen-in-schools/360fair.html?fairId=4634296&fbclid=IwAR3fmYYKlDoRbawU0ZG4XI29BpS_TRe0GAa2tILj2r0hbrubKs7n5Jgbo54

We've heard from multiple staff and parents that the students had a "fall"bulous time at last week's class Halloween/fall parties. Virtual kids were able to join in the fun too, with Zoom Bingo, science experiments, and costume contests. We're grateful for these small opportunities to provide a sense of normalcy to our children and appreciate the efforts of our Room Parents who are willing to adapt to a new normal.

The Westwood Directory is hot off the presses! Congratulations to art contest winners Emily Bacon, Cora Hensel, and Paul Winningham, who did a great job illustrating the school theme: "We are like a box of crayons - together we make a beautiful picture."

PTO members received their free PDF copy of the directory to their inbox. The directory has contact info for more than 200 Westwood families, class lists (though we know those are a moving target this year!), a staff roster, and more student art. Hate PDF scrolling? Order your hard copy here: https://westwood-elementary-directory.cheddarup.com

They're just $5 and a great resource to have on hand. Once you place your order, we'll email you to let you know when to expect delivery via your student's backpack. Virtual families, we'll email you to arrange a special delivery.

We hope the directory serves as a useful tool to foster connections between Westwood families during a time when connection is what is needed most.

As the busiest shopping season of the year is upon us, don't forget to consider supporting Westwood PTO through Amazon Smile. Head to smile.amazon.com and search for "Westwood Elementary Parent Teacher Organization" (be sure it's the school in Novelty...there are lots of Westwoods out there). Amazon will then donate 0.5% of your purchase back to our school. Thanks for considering us!

Our next PTO Members virtual meeting is Thursday, 11/12 @ 12pm. A Zoom link will be posted to Facebook, our website, and through members' inboxes at least one day in advance. Please join us!
