November Optional Diploma Exams
Alberta Education announced on October 13, 2020 that Diploma Exams for November 2020 will be optional. Below is some information from their announcement that we thought is pertinent for you.
Diploma Exams - Questions and Answers (see Alberta Education for more details)
Q1. For November 2020, diploma exams are optional. Who determines who writes them?
Students and parents determine if they write their diploma exam or not. If the choice is made not to write them, students will receive an exemption. To receive an exemption, students need to be currently taking the course and receive a school-awarded mark for the November term.
Q2. I am registered to more than one diploma exam in November 2020. Can I choose to only write one of them, and receive an exemption from the other one?
Yes, for November 2020 students may choose to write only the diploma exams that they want. However, for two-part diploma exams like English Language Arts 30-1, students are required to write both parts.
Q3. Is there a deadline for students to decide if they want to write November 2020 diploma exams?
A student can choose not to write the diploma exam right up until the exam is administered. The department will provide diploma exams to schools through a supplemental shipment process. To ensure adequate diploma exams are provided to schools in time for students to write them, schools are required to provide the approximate numbers of diploma exams to the department by October 20, 2020.
Q4. If a student chooses to write November 2020 diploma exams but is dissatisfied with the mark, can the student choose for it not to count?
No. If a student chooses to write the diploma exam, the mark from the exam will be combined with the school mark (70% school-awarded mark, 30% diploma exam mark).
A PowerSchool form will be available in the next while. Please let us know if you:
- intend to write one or both of your exams.
- do not intend to write any exam or are unsure

Visitors in Schools
Non-essential visitors and contractors ARE NOT permitted in the school or workplace without an appointment. To make an appointment, contact the school directly. If permission is granted and an appointment is made, the visitor or contractor must complete the verbal COVID-19 Screening Questionnaire. If any of the answers to the questions are “YES,” DO NOT enter the school or workplace. Similarly, if feeling unwell or have COVID-19 symptoms—fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of smell and taste, aches, pink-eye, nausea —DO NOT enter an EIPS-operated school or workplace. After entering, sanitize hands, sign the visitor log at the main office and wait for further instruction from school administration. For deliveries, offload at the designated location. And, as always, practice respiratory etiquette and physical distancing. Wearing personal protective equipment—a non-medical mask or face-covering—is mandatory.
Volunteers and volunteer opportunities within an EIPS school or building are suspended until further notice
