Smith Middle School Newsletter
December 12, 2018
Good afternoon Smith Parents,
As the semester comes to a close, we as an administration are taking time to evaluate processes and procedures in place for after school tutorials. Your student’s academic success at Smith is our top priority as well as his or her safety once the tutorial is complete. When students return to school in January, after school tutorials will have new measures in place to ensure our goals of academic success and campus safety.
Tutorial updates:
1. Math, Science, ELAR, and Social Studies will have specific tutorial days.
- Social Studies - Monday
- ELAR - Tuesday
- Science - Wednesday
- Math - Thursday
- All other courses – specific day scheduled by teacher
2. All tutorials will end at 4:00 p.m. Students who ride the late bus will be escorted to study hall and car riders will be escorted to their parent’s car in the car rider line.
3. Teachers will invite students to tutorials based on specific academic needs and re-teach opportunities.
4. If a student has a specific need, he or she will ask the teacher for a tutorial slip which requires a parent signature. Tutorials slips will no longer be online.
5. Opportunity Lab will continue to serve as the time when students make-up missed assignments, tests, etc. until 4:30.
We appreciate your support ensuring the safety of our students!
Kindest regards,
Kristen Brower
Director of Instruction

ID BADGE PHASE II
One of the safety precautions our district has implemented this school year is to require all students to wear school issued ID badges. Our students have had the fall semester to get acclimated to the new district policy. Most students have done an excellent job of wearing their ID badge without reminders or needing a temporary badge. However, we are still issuing several temporary ID badges every day.
After semester break, we will be moving to Phase II of the badge policy. Please review the following list of consequences with your student. Students wearing their student ID is a non-negotiable district expectation.
We appreciate your help and support as we work to ensure every student entering our building is a Smith student. This is just one of the measures implemented on our campus to keep our students and staff safe.
Beginning January 7th
1st Temporary Badge - $1 fee and a Warning
2nd Temporary Badge - $1 fee and a Warning
3rd Temporary Badge - $1 fee and a Lunch Detention
4th Temporary Badge - $1 fee and After School D-hall
