Peekapak Pals
Our week started with a letter from the Peekapak pals, Cody, Leo, and Menka. They are part of a new Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program that will help teach and reinforce social skills. We were so excited to get a letter from these pals that we decided to write them letters. There are twelve pals that live in Peekaville. We read the first read aloud were Leo was worried about his first day of school. In this story, many of the pals were struggling to control their emotions with their new classmates. This story along with some activities will help students to understand various feelings and how to self-regulate these feelings. It is important to understand that these feelings are natural and everyone gets excited, embarrassed, annoyed, and surprised. We then work to be able to regulate how we handle these emotions and how to get our bodies back to feeling calm.
One of our first group activities allowed us to work with our teams to sort these emotions on a chart. Students grouped similar feelings and glued them based on their distance from feeling calm (which was placed in the center). The teams did a fantastic job discussing how various feelings were connected to each other.
Math
We are diving deeper into addition and subtraction by writing out equations. We learned what plus, minus and equal signs are and how to use them in our equations. Students then acted out story problems, decided if they were adding or subtracting and described the problem with the equation. They also began writing these equations with their partner by rolling dice and writing equations!
Letter Formation
We continued practicing letter formation by skywriting letters as well as tracing and writing them in our notebooks.
