Mrs. Walden's Weekly Update
Week of Aug. 8-12
Hello Cardinal, Families!
We have had a great first week of school! I am so glad that I finally got to join everyone on Wednesday, as I have truly enjoyed getting to know more about each of your kids' and getting to know their personalities. What a great group we have! Next week, we will be starting assessing so that we can gather more data about each child's current reading levels. We will also begin diving into the curriculum a bit.
P.S. I realize that this item was not on the supply list, and I apologize for that, but I would love for everyone to please have a clipboard to make working at the carpet/ stations around the room a bit easier. Please send one in with your child as soon as you get the chance. THANKS!!
Curriculum
Math: We will continue to set up class procedures, assessing math skills, and starting our first unit- addition and subtraction within 10 and learning to subitize to 20.
Social Studies: We will be starting our unit on communities.
Writing: We will be focusing on developing proper sentence structure.
A Few Reminders:
- It may be HOT outside, but our classroom gets quite chilly. I recommend sending in a jacket with your child. Please make sure their name is in it, and that it is in dress code. Students may only wear solid (or UA) navy or white jackets/ sweaters in the building.
- Please make sure to read and follow the UA dress code. This year, we will be buckling down on dress code infractions. I especially want to point out the rules about wearing a belt (if there are belt loops) and keeping shirts tucked in, as those seem to be the most common infractions that we see.
- Carpool: Please be in carpool line no later than 3:30 each day. As the year goes on, carpool will get much faster.
- If you have not sent in all of your child's school supplies yet, please do that as soon as possible. We are trying to get everything labeled.
- Please make sure you send in a $1 with your child if they dress down on Fridays AND you did NOT pay online already. We had several students who were dressed down today with no $1. At this time, it could be that my list was printed before those people paid. We will send you a message next week if your child is dressed down without paying.
- Teachers have received ID badges for students, and we will start using them next week. Please send a break-away lanyard in with your child ASAP if you haven't already done so.
Shoes
There are a lot of things I "thought" should be so easy for parents to help their kids with before actually becoming a parent, and shoe-tying is definitely one of those. It's also one of those skills that not everyone learns the same way, and I definitely realized this after trying to teach my youngest daughter on several occasions and her still being nowhere close. It was at that time that I stumbled across this shoe-tying trick, and she got it almost immediately! If you're feeling like me and getting frustrated, I hope it can help you too! It doesn't work for every pair of shoes, but it does work for the majority of the ones we have at our house at least.
P.S. This is the first time I've ever shared this trick with parents. I'd love to hear back from you if this helps your kid so I know if it's something I should keep sharing or not! :)
