Senior Parents/Guardians:
Make sure to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application if you have not already done so. This application can be found at fafsa.gov. The FAFSA is the most important application in the financial aid process. All colleges and universities will require the FAFSA before determining a financial aid award. Colleges may also require students to complete a CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (profileonline.collegeboard.org) and/or a college specific financial aid application. It is important to be aware of each college's financial aid deadlines - missing deadlines could result in missing out on financial aid. For more information on the financial aid process please visit mefa.org.
Middlesex Community College will host FAFSA Day, a free community workshop to help students and families fill out the 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the federally required application for financial aid. The workshop will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, on the Lowell campus, 33 Kearney Square.
FAFSA Day at Middlesex offers different options for families seeking assistance, including computer support, to complete the FAFSA online, as well as one-on-one assistance from financial aid experts. To register please go to FAFSADay.org.
Message from the Health Office
From Debbie Donohoe BSN, RN, NCSN in the Health Office:
We have been experiencing an increase in the number of students experiencing flu-like symptoms and those being diagnosed with Flu (Influenza) and Strep Throat by their physicians.
Symptoms of Flu can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, dizziness, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Some people with Flu will not have fever. If your child has the Flu, they should stay home to rest and to avoid giving the Flu to others. They should be kept home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of fever (chills, feeling very warm, flushed appearance or sweating) without using fever reducing medication like Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), or OTC (over-the-counter) cold or Flu products containing these medications. Flu is diagnosed by your clinician with a nasal swab. Sometimes antiviral medication is prescribed. This medication works best when started within the first 2 days of illness, but may help reduce the severity of illness if started 2 or more days after onset of illness for persons who are very sick.
Strep Throat is characterized by the sudden onset of a very red, painful throat often, but not always, accompanied by fever, tender and swollen lymph nodes, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, and/or vomiting. Sometimes strep throat will be accompanied by coughing or, less often, runny nose. A throat swab by your clinician is needed to make a clinical diagnosis of strep. If diagnosed with strep, your child cannot return to school until they have taken antibiotics for at least 24 hours. Antibiotics taken for strep throat reduce the length of time you are sick, complications from untreated strep, and help prevent the spread of infection to friends and family members.
Prevention Tips to avoid Flu, Strep and other viruses & bacteria that cause illness:
*Keep hands away from nose, mouth and eyes.
*Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
*Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or bent arm when coughing or sneezing.
*Do not drink from same glass, eat from same plate, or share utensils with someone who is sick.
*Avoid direct contact, especially saliva & droplets from coughing & sneezing, with those who are sick.
*The Massachusetts Department of Public health is still advising that the single best way to prevent influenza is vaccination of everyone six months of age and older.
If your child is diagnosed with Flu or Strep, please notify me by calling (978) 649-7571 and ask to speak with the Nurse OR send an email to debbie.donohoe@tyngsboroughps.org.
Notes from your child's physician may be sent via my HIPPA compliant fax (978) 649-1877
Thank you and stay healthy!
