Welcome to Week Seven
Percentages (MAT090)
Weekly Content - Percentages
"My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest." [1]
-- Warren Buffet
This week we're going to look at an application of ratios and proportions called percentages. This is one of the most generally useful topics we'll be discussing this quarter because it comes up so often in areas like commissions, sales tax and the compound interest that Mr. Buffet was referring to.

Weekly Motivation
We've reached seven so we're getting to the point where your initial enthusiasm may be starting to wear off. I know that, when I'm taking a class, there often comes a time shortly after the half way point where it starts to become a grind. In this class, that usually means that discussion posts start to get shorter, they start showing up later and later in the week and Aleks hours start to decline. At this point, I like to take a step back, maybe take a couple of days off and not think about the class and try to recapture what martial arts instructors call a "beginner's mind", i.e. the level of enthusiasm and excitement that a beginner has when he first starts on a new course.
Class Notes - Aleks Modules
We're coming up on the end of the quarter so you should be focusing on your Aleks module numbers. To get full credit for the Aleks assignment in the grade book (which represents a large part of your over all grade), you have to have completed all 250 modules by the end of the course. If you have any questions about the number of modules you have left to complete or how many you need to complete per week to get there, let me know and I'll be glad to discuss the numbers with you.
Technical Issues
If you're having technical issues with accessing Blackboard or Aleks, you should contact the Strayer University help desk at 877.642.2999. If you're having issues once you're in Blackboard, e.g. uploading files, downloading files or viewing the grade book, you should contact the Blackboard help desk at 1.866.350.9427. I'll be glad to answer any questions you have about the course's content but faculty don't have the training or access to do any kind of tech support.
Contacting Me
There are a number of ways for you to reach me during this course:
- E-mail: gregory.allen@strayer.edu
- Telephone: 813.995.8622 (office hours only)
- Skype: prof.gregory.allen
Office Hours
I will have three virtual office hours for each week of the course, with time allocated during the week to focus on the assignments and their due dates. I'll be available every Tuesday from 8:00 - 10:00 AM ET and from 8:00 - 9:00 PM ET and on Thursday from 8:00 - 10:00 PM ET.
Outside of those hours, Skype is the best way to get a hold of me. I'm usually online working in the afternoon and early evening so those are great times to get a hold of me if you have a quick question on a problem or assignment.
