News and Notes for Teachers- November 5
Dear Staff
Thank you all for your support of students and sang froid dealing with all the chaos of Thursday. You are an amazing staff. Don't forget to do the lesson in advisory so students can process the event.
Congratulations on completing a successful first quarter. I saw and heard about a lot of great strategies and instruction in your classrooms. We're off to a great start. Think about what went well and what you want to work on for next quarter. This week you will be communicating with parents that are anxious to know how their child is doing. Let them know you like their child even if there are things they need to work on. Lead with a positive.
Have a good week.
Mary

Follow-up letter to parents
Dear South Meadows Families, As you may be aware, additional rumors continue to circulate regarding the situation at South Meadows last Thursday. We wanted to communicate again with you in hopes of stopping the rumors and to provide you with factual information. As we shared in our previous communication, some students had come forward to share the rumor of a threat with us and we immediately talked to the students that were possibly involved in order to gather more accurate information with our School Resource Officer. A message went up on our website to assure families that our students were safe and an auto-dialer call went out right after. We have heard from some families that they may not have received the auto-dialer call or the email we sent. If you didn’t receive the call, please be sure to check ParentVue or call the registrar to confirm that the primary phone number we have for your student is accurate. The auto-dialer is our quickest method to reach families and we want to have accurate information. If you didn’t receive the email, please also check the email addresses you have listed as well as your spam folder. There have also been false rumors that have circulated on social media. At no time was there a student with a gun on campus nor was there a shooting of any kind. Unfortunately, during the day, some of those rumors were being shared as fact, which led to an increased concern about what had occurred at school. Moving forward, this is an opportunity to talk with your child about threats and rumors and how sharing those rumors with an adult is essential. We truly appreciate the students that came forward to let us know about what they had heard, as their reports allowed us to take swift action. It is also a time to discuss how threats of violence against schools are not something that should be joked about in conversations or posted online to be funny. We take all of these statements seriously and students that choose to do this could not only face school consequences, but legal consequences as well. On Monday, we will be talking to students during advisory about the above information and will allow students additional time to process their concerns and emotions, if needed. We will also have a School Resource Officer at the building to help alleviate concerns about safety that students may have about returning to school. Students who need additional support will be able to access the counseling center. Thank you again for your help in keeping South Meadows a safe place for students and staff! Sincerely, Mary Mendez Principal
