College Access Newsletter

January 2016 Edition

Junior Students: Now is the time!

This edition of the College Access Newsletter is dedicated to our juniors -- the graduating class of 2017. This coming semester is a crucial time in you educational life. It is time to start making some of your most important decisions regarding your post-secondary education. During this semester you should: 1) Prepare for and take the SAT, 2) Continue to build you academic resume with good grades in challenging courses and by taking leadership roles in extra-curricular activities, and 3) gathering information on prospective colleges.

Remember, your future is too important to leave to chance. You need to plan now!

The Junior Timeline.

What should I get done before my senior year?

  1. Take the SAT
  2. Prepare for a challenging senior year. Choose classes that will help gain you access to the school you want to attend.
  3. Start you scholarship search. There are many scholarships out there; you just need to spend a little bit of time and effort to find them. Use online scholarship search tools like fastweb.com to find a wide range of scholarship options. Just remember, these tools should always be free. Do not use those that charge.
  4. Contact your recommendation writers. You will be needing at least two letters of recommendation for college applications and scholarships. Let them know early so they can prepare.
  5. Apply for a summer job or internship. The right position look great on a resume.
  6. Set up appointments at your top college choices. You should try to visit at least two or three of your potential colleges during the summer.

In addition, students will receive extra-support from our Early College staff and help in obtaining the all-important work experience and/or internship.
