Staff Newsletter
Week of Jan. 15 - 19, 2018
Message from the Principal
I hope that all of you have a wonderful and restful 3-day weekend. I wanted to let you know that Amparo, Bridget, and I have been working hard on the plans for next year and we have the plan firmly in place. I have just sent out individual Smores for the 4th and 5th grade families, so that they can have the information as soon as it is available. It will also be presented to families at the State of the School on Jan. 25th. Here is the outline:
- PK 3 - No Changes to model/numbers (100% Spanish)
- PK 4 - No Changes (we will need to, once again, fill the section of 20 before we add the section of 10) (100% Spanish)
- Kindergarten - At this point, it will only be one section. We would only add a second, if we were to add about 15 more students. (90% Spanish and 10% English)
- 1st Grade - We will have two 1st grade classes next year and 2 teachers (one English and one Spanish). These teachers will be partners as Celine and Kaelyn are this year. Current projections are 35 students total. (50/50 English/Spanish, one day, one day)
- 2nd Grade - This person will team teach with the 3rd grade teacher. (One English and one Spanish) (50/50 English/Spanish, one day, one day)
- 3rd Grade - This person will team teach with the 2nd grade teacher. (One English and one Spanish) (50/50 English/Spanish, one day, one day)
- 4th Grade - No changes to model/numbers (50/50 English/Spanish, one day, one day)
- 5th/6th Grade - We are projecting 12 students entering 5th grade and 10 students for 6th grade. We will have a multi-age classroom with both 5th and 6th grade combined. This will be a 50/50 (Spanish/English) model. With a class of approximately 22 kids, the students will have a high quality dual-language experience, while also benefiting from a larger class to be able to do more collaborative/project based learning.
- 7th/8th Grade - No major change, but we are considering adding an introductory Spanish class.
***We will either have a bilingual teacher for the 5/6 or that person will team teach with the 4th grade teacher (one in English and one in Spanish)
Both Amparo and I think these are wonderful changes, which will continue to grow a fantastic dual-immersion program and address the realities of our enrollment numbers.
Please don't hesitate to ask me if you need clarification on any of these or you have an interest in one of the teaching positions for next year. I know that a lot of people are up in the air and I appreciate hearing from everyone as to their thoughts for the 2018-19 school year.
Have a wonderful week!
Blessings,
Katie Dempsey
