Friendship Family Newsletter
July 24, 2020
We hope this letter finds you well! We are looking forward to seeing many familiar faces as students return to school, and will be welcoming many new children to our community, too. We are committed to the health, safety, and well-being of our school community. As a follow-up to the letter from Kate Ericson, the plan specific to our school is outlined below. The outline is not meant to be exhaustive, as our detailed school-specific plan is available following the district plan linked in the letter from Kate Ericson. Please note that our school calendar has changed. We will have a virtual “meet the teacher day” on August 31, and the first day of school is September 1.
We are excited to host three opportunities to connect with you via a “Town Hall” style Zoom meeting. The dates and links are as follows:

In the middle of August, you will receive information about your child’s classroom team, more detailed descriptions of the arrival/dismissal process (including videos), and a virtual building tour. If you have any questions about special education or related services, please email Dr. Meghan Pogonelski, special education supervisor: mpogonelski@learn.k12.ct.us.
We are very appreciative of your input and partnership. The health and safety of our students and staff continue to be our top priorities. We are excitedly designing learning experiences for your child to ensure a positive pre-kindergarten and kindergarten experience, including virtual learning options. Our partnership will be the foundation for a safe, effective, and fun learning environment. Please discuss the importance of masks and social distancing, model mask wearing, have your child practice wearing a mask, and reassure your child that she or he will be safe and will have fun at The Friendship School!
Respectfully,
Andrea Simmons, Principal: asimmons@thefriendshipschool.org
Luz Rivera, Assistant Principal: lrivera@thefriendshipschool.org
Cohorting, Schedules, and Transitions
Students will stay in their classroom throughout the day, with a few exceptions. The daily schedule will include mask breaks throughout the day, including recess, lunch, physical education, creative movement class, and dedicated mask breaks
We are designing a schedule that will minimize crossing traffic throughout the building. We have also identified areas that will be designated as “one way.” Polyvinyl spot markers will be placed on the floor throughout the building to indicate and guide where students and staff members should walk.
Staff will be available to assist with toilet training for those children who need it. Staff will be provided with the appropriate PPE in these situations. Summer is a wonderful opportunity to toilet train your child so that they can use the bathroom at school with minimal support.
Arrival and Dismissal
At this time, only students and staff will be allowed to enter the building. There will be a dedicated car lane for arrival and dismissal. We will be using an app to streamline this process, and will share more information in August, along with a video to show the process.
Students will be assigned seats on the bus to keep within the cohorting model. Whether arriving on the bus or by car, students will be received by staff members either by cohort or individually. If students are arriving individually/apart from their cohort, we will have staff members stationed at the entrance and throughout the building to guide your child directly to their classroom.
If you need to pickup your child early due to illness or an appointment, please ring the front doorbell and we will bring your child to the entrance of the school. Please be sure to wear a mask.
In order to accommodate family schedules and preferences as much as possible, we are asking pre-kindergarten families to respond to the question in theAugust 7 LEARN survey that asks if you are interested in dismissal prior to rest time. This dismissal time would be 1:00 instead of 3:30. Families will need to commit to a pickup time of 1:00 each day if selecting this option.
Daily Schedules & Academics
In the classrooms and throughout the building, we will be working to maintain social distancing. The reality is that some young children will have difficulty with this. Frequent modeling and redirection, as well as time dedicated to explicit instruction on health and safety practices (social distancing, handwashing, mask wearing) will be embedded throughout the day.
Students will have their own covered bin of materials provided by the school containing items such as crayons, pencils, play-dough, math manipulatives, etc. These bins will be kept in their cubby when not in use. Common classroom materials, such as blocks and books will be accessed in small groups. The rotations will be limited. We ask that you send in a pair of headphones for your child to use with the iPad we will provide for each student. The iPad and headphones will go home each day so that virtual learning can continue, should your child need to stay home from school.
We have always been dedicated to social-emotional learning at The Friendship School. We will carve out time to connect as a group each day in our “morning meeting,” following Conscious Discipline and Responsive Classroom practices. Building a classroom community that prioritizes the physical and emotional well-being of all will set the foundation for success this year. We know that students need to feel safe and have their basic needs met in order for them to be available for learning. Please stay in close contact with your child’s teacher regarding any changes at home or needs.
Our essentials teachers (visual art, music, and library) will be visiting each classroom. The current plan is for each class to have the same essentials class throughout the week for a number of weeks, then switch to a new essentials class. Creative Movement and physical education classes will be provided weekly.
Please see the information above in “Arrival and Dismissal” to learn more about the survey for pre-kindergarteners dismissing prior to rest time.
Meals
All students will eat in the classroom to minimize transitions, and will eat in the same table spot each day (six feet apart from peers). We strongly encourage all families to pay online if purchasing school meals. If this is not possible, you may send in cash in your child’s backpack. We will provide information about how to setup online payments.
Containment
We have worked closely with our nursing supervisor, Christin Kondash, to rearrange the health office for maximum safety should a student present with symptoms of being ill. We have a room within the health office with three nurse office beds in different areas of the room that will be used for the comfort of any students with symptoms. Our friendly school nursing staff members will be present to attend to your child’s needs. You will immediately receive a phone call; if we are not able to reach parents/guardians, we will call the emergency contacts listed. It is imperative that you keep us updated as contact information changes, that you list emergency contacts who are able to pickup your child if need be. Your child will need to be picked up within an hour of our phone call. Please take this time to a make plan in case your child needs to be picked up early.
To the greatest extent possible, classroom staff members who are trained in first aid will administer treatment for minor injuries. If a child needs to visit the health office but has no symptoms, there is an area separate from the containment area where they will be treated.
Communication
We are committed to frequent and effective communication. We utilize the School Messenger system to make “robo calls,” send text messages, and send emails. It is essential that you contact our main office immediately if you have a new phone number, email, or change of address. If you are a returning family, and you’re unsure if we have the correct contact information, please email Robin Campbell, school secretary: rcampbell@thefriendshipschool.org. We no longer use Bloomz. Classroom teachers will utilize SeeSaw and email for class communications, and are available for phone calls before and after school, as needed.

Respetuosamente,
Andrea Simmons, Principal: asimmons@thefriendshipschool.org
Luz Rivera, Asistente Principal: lrivera@thefriendshipschool.org
Cohortes (grupos), horarios y transiciones
