9 SAA Middle School Students Make Region Orchestra

Region Orchestra auditions were held Saturday, October 7th, and Southwood Academy students did very well! The following students made Region Orchestra: Kira (not in photo), Emily, Robert, Isabella, Evan for violin; Caroline, Hannah, and Tess for viola; and Nick for bass. Southwood Academy's Max (bass) and Cailyn (cello) are both alternates. Mrs. Griffith is very proud of all of her strings students!

Mr. Grombacher to Visit Mahoney's ELA Classes

The Anderson County Public Library is hosting the Starburst Storytellers' Festival October 15-19. Mr. Grombacher has graciously offered to provide workshops to Miss Mahoney's classes Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. Mr. Grombacher is a professional storyteller who weaves stories of the West together using poetry, song, and narrative. Halloween Guidelines

Mr. Smith needs parents and students to know that they are NOT allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school. They often create distractions in classrooms. Please enjoy costumes, trick-or-treating, and all of the goodies after school on Halloween!

SAA's Fall Dance

SAA's student government sponsored Fall Dance will be Friday, October 20th after school until 4:30 pm. There is no entrance fee for the dance, but students may want to bring a little bit of money to purchase concessions.

National School Lunch Week at SAA

Last week was National School Lunch Week. The cafeteria had giveaways and treats for the students. Mr. Smith was a guest server Friday. Thank you to our cafeteria staff and all that they do for SAA!

Get Your Book and Read Wednesday!

Get your hands on your favorite book and bring it to the cafeteria Wednesday morning! Before MM, we are going to have school-wide reading time. Reading reduces stress, develops vocabulary, develops memory, encourages focus and concentration, improves writing skills, and so much more. This can also help students work toward their Read Your Way to the Big Game goals. Don't forget your book!

Make-up Picture Day

If you were absent this past week during picture day (Thursday, September 28th), the make-up picture day will be Thursday, October 19th!

8th Grade Theatre Presents Kiss of Death

October is the month we enjoy a good scare! 8th Grade Theatre will present Kiss of Death Thursday, October 26th in the Black Box Theatre at 6:00 pm. Adult tickets are $7 and student tickets are $5. Be there for a frightfully good time!

Read Your Way to the Big Game

All students are encouraged to participate in the Read Your Way to the Big Game reading contest! They received information and forms from their ELA teachers this past week. Students have until November 10th to read 6 books, and we know they can do it! Students who participate will be placed in a drawing for 4 tickets and sideline passes to the November 25th Carolina vs. Clemson football game! If your student loses his or her form, a link to the form is below.

Media Center Grade Level Book Clubs

Book club members have received their bookmark and copy of the book! The first book club meeting will be Wednesday, October 18th. Bring your lunch and your book to the media center during lunch! We will eat and chat about the chapters we have read. *Sorry, book club doesn't excuse you from lunch detention, so get all of your work turned in!

Celtic Fest is Saturday, October 21st at Calhoun Academy!

8th Grade Field Trip - Othello

The 8th grade students will go the Peace Center to see Othello November 6th during the school day (10:45 - 2:30). The cost for the field trip is $15 per student. Ms. Alden will be in the cafeteria in the mornings to collect ticket money. Permission forms for the trip will be distributed during social studies class.

McCants Girls Basketball Tryouts

McCants girls basketball tryouts will be November 1st and 2nd. All girls must have a completed physical in order to participate. If you need more information, please email the basketball coach Bill Batson.

The next DC trip payment of $107 is due Wednesday, November 8th!

Washington DC Trip

The Washington DC trip for 7th and 8th grade students will be May 30 - June 2nd. The total cost for the trip will be $685. Trip information form and payment schedule form are below. For questions about the trip, contact Miss Paradis, and for questions about fund raising, contact Mrs. Patterson.

DC Field Trip Fundraising News

If your student is fundraising for the trip, please be aware that the money earned from the fundraiser will be applied to spring field trip payments. The deposit and fall payments must be paid because they allow the school to meet its deadlines for the buses and hotel rooms.

SAA - Meet at the Movies?

Would you and your family like to see the movie Wonder Saturday, November 18th before 6:00 pm? If so, please express your interest and fill in the Google form below. If we have enough interest (at least 100 people), we will be able to reserve a theater at Amstar 14 and pay a slightly reduced ticket price ($8.00 for students and adults). If you need to see the movie trailer, it is at the bottom of the interest form!

End of the 1st 9 Weeks

The end of the 1st 9 weeks is Tuesday, October 24th! Students need to make sure all work is turned in so teachers can process grades. Report cards go home with students on Tuesday, October 31st.

Beta Club Reminders

Beta Club members, make sure you check Google Classroom for service opportunities and changes. There will be meeting Wednesday, October 25th.

6th Grade Students and T-DAP Vaccines

6th graders will need to get the T-DAP immunization BEFORE they begin the 7th grade! Please schedule your appointment early; the heath department is only providing immunizations a few days a month.


After your 6th grader receives the immunization, please get the SC Department of Immunization record and turn it in to Robin Rosa as soon as possible. For more information, please email our school nurse, Robin Rosa.
