Glennwood Elementary ~ Where Learning Takes Flight

Holly Brookins, PhD, Principal ~ Summer Clayton, Assistant Principal ~ Jill Tolsma, Instructional Coach

Hello Glennwood Families,

We will be scheduling parent-teacher conferences in-person or virtually this year during the weeks of October 2nd and 9th. We look forward to a rich discussion about the academic and work habits-related progress your child demonstrated throughout the first 8-9 weeks of school. You should receive an email/notification from your child's teacher with information regarding how to sign up for a parent-teacher conference soon. Be sure to record the time and date of your child’s conference in your personal calendar. Missed conferences may not be able to be rescheduled promptly.

At this conference, your child’s teacher will share overall impressions regarding how your child is adapting to the routines of the classroom, the behaviors your child exhibits that promote learning, as well as results from formative and universal screener assessments that we have administered.

This conference will be the official method for communicating your child’s progress for the first 9 weeks of school.

Thank you so much for collaborating with us! We look forward to partnering with you so that we can support your child's continued growth and success.

Have a wonderful fall break,

Holly Brookins, Ph.D.

Principal

I hope that everyone has a safe and wonderful Fall Break. If you will be staying home next week and take on the task of cleaning out your child’s clothes, we will happily take any donations of good condition clothing, shoes and jackets. We really would appreciate underwear for both boys and girls as well.

Please provide a change of clothes that can be kept in your child's locker. The playground is muddy, kids spill things, and all kids, even the 2nd graders, have bathroom accidents. The school has a very limited supply of extra clothes and underwear. If your child needs a change of clothes, and we do not have something to fit, we will call you to bring in a change. Having an extra set in their locker will alleviate interrupting your day and will help the child return to class asap.

As always, if you have questions, please reach out by email at ebarrington@csdecatur.net or 404-370-4435

Important Information about Gifted Review

Each fall semester the gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and give it to the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before October 4th. No additional information is needed. The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Glennwood is Susanna Shewan. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact Ms. Shewan at sshewan@csdecatur.net or visit the following website.

We are so excited to share with families that Booktoberfest is coming to Glennwood! Booktoberfest is a month-long celebration of special events all centered around growing great readers at Glennwood and building a lifelong love of reading! Events will be sponsored by our community partners, GL PTA or the school.

We are thrilled to be offering two author events in October for all K-2 students. Our first author event is sponsored by Brave + Kind Bookshop with Dan Paley coming on October 6th. Brave + Kind Bookshop offers parents the opportunity to purchase the book directly with the bookstore by simply scanning the QR code below. Orders are due by October 1. Super easy!

On October 9, we will be hosting Peter Reynolds in conjunction with the Children's Literature Brunch event, both sponsored by Little Shop of Stories. Sidekick Program at Glennwood for 2023-24 School Year

Is your child part of the AANHPI and/or APIDA community? Consider becoming part of the Sidekick program at Glennwood ES.

To foster a sense of support and connection within the CSD AANHPI/APIDA community, Decatur HS student mentors will be grouped into pairs and matched up with Glennwood elementary students.

There will be ~7 in-person sessions occurring monthly on Fridays between 11:30 and 12:30 starting this fall (Sept or Oct) and going through April. Meetings will be held at the Glenwood ES campus.

Each session typically includes get to know you games, team work activities, art work, and high five friendship cheers.

This program is free and open to all identifying AANHPI/APIDA students at Glenwood ES.

The program is an initiative supported by CSD's Department of Equity and Student Services and Decatur HS's Asian Student Union. This will be our 3rd year of Sidekicks since beginning in the '21 - '22 school year.

The program is coordinated by Ms Beth Lewis, a 15 year teacher veteran of CSD and Decatur HS, and mom of 3 CSD children including a current Glenwood kindergartner. Ms Lewis is of Japanese descent (mother is from Tokyo) and also sponsors Decatur HS's Asian Student Union.

Please complete the Google form HERE by Sept 15th. Questions - please reach out to Ms Lewis at elewis@csdecatur.net.
