Glennwood Elementary ~ Where Learning Takes Flight

Holly Brookins, PhD, Principal ~ Jill Tolsma, Instructional Coach Karen Hearn, School Manager

Hello Glennwood Families,

Due to the rise in COVID cases, we want to strongly encourage our students and staff to continue to mask. We have decided the best course of action is to shift our Field Day from Friday, May 20 to Monday, May 23. The time will remain the same from 9:00-11:00 am with a kick-off at 8:45 am on the blacktop.

Also, we are watching the weather for Field Day as Monday currently shows a rain forecast, so we may have to shift to Thursday morning. We will make a decision by the end of the day on Friday as to whether we will have Field Day on Monday or next Thursday, May 26. Please see more details below on Field Day.

Last week, Glennwood teachers and staff along with CSD staff from the Curriculum and Instruction team attended the second part of a two-part course entitled Understanding Dyslexia. The course was taught by Brenda Fitzgerald, executive director of Georgia Educational Training Agency which has been a leader in education for 25 years. Brenda works to provide comprehensive, research-based, classroom-tested professional development and educational consulting. She is CERI certified as a Structured Literacy and Dyslexia Specialist. She provided teachers and staff with an overview of dyslexia and classroom strategies that work for all learners. We learned so much and are proud to continue to advance our learning in the area of early literacy!

Warmest regards,

Dr. Holly Brookins

Principal

Field Day on May 23!

Prepare for fun in the sun on Field Day, Monday, May 23 (Rescheduled from May 20)! Make sure to send your child with sunscreen already applied, a hat, a water bottle, and a change of clothes. They may wear a swimsuit UNDER their clothes if they wish as there will be several water activities. Also, students should wear tennis shoes for running activities and protection. Field Day T-Shirts are provided for each student courtesy of Timothy Cox & Co Realtors. Students will receive these in crew meeting the morning of field day. Questions? Email Coach Meg at minscoe@csdecatur.net.

Lastly, we will continue our End of Field Day Water Soak which is a Glennwood tradition with our 2nd-grade students celebrating their last year at Glennwood. (Parents - Please bring your water guns and soakers if you'd like to participate.)

Glennwood Summer Reading Resources 2022

What Should I Read?

Read what you love to read and have fun! The most important part is to READ! Instead of a list of books to share with you this summer, we are sharing several resources where you can find great books. Let your Glennwood Eagle choose what they love to read most! Join a free summer reading program, read online, or reread some of your favorite books from home. The more you read, the more you'll grow!

Please find a list of summer reading resources HERE or click on the pdf below.

ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE FRIDAY, MAY 20!

Big picture

It is so hard to believe we are down to our last few days of school. It has been an honor to take care of and get to know your sweet children.

Important Information from the Clinic for the End of the Year

-If your child has medications at school, I will be in contact with you to arrange the best time/day to pick them up. We are not able to store medications over the summer for returning students. Any medication not picked up will be disposed of.

Looking forward to the start of the 2022/2023 school year:

  • If your child has a Medical Care Plan (asthma, seizures, anaphylaxis/allergy), please plan on having it updated this summer with your child’s health care provider. School Health requires an updated care plan each school year.
  • If your child will have medication stored at school next year, please have a new Medication Authorization Form completed. All prescription medications require a prescribing provider’s signature (as well as a parent/guardian’s signature). Over-the-counter medications only require a parent/guardian’s signature.
  • If your child is due for immunizations this summer, please plan on having them completed and up-to-date by the beginning of the 2022-23 school year.

We do have point-of-care COVID tests available in the nurse's office for students who develop symptoms at school. Parents will need to provide consent for all point-of-care tests. You can register by following THIS LINK.

Just a reminder, school policy states that a student who has a fever can not return to school until the student remains fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Thank you all for your support in keeping your child home when they are sick.

If you are cleaning out old clothes, we will gladly take some (5T to M/L). We need mostly bottoms and are really low on underwear.

As always, if you have any questions, please call 404-370-4435 or email ebarrington@csdecatur.net.

Calling Second Grade Families: Staff Appreciation Event on Last Day of School

Each grade has sponsored a staff appreciation table event twice during the year. We are asking Second Grade families to help with a final send-off breakfast on Friday, May 27th, the last day of school. Please join us in letting our teachers know how much we appreciate everything they did for our students this year and how much you will miss them as students head to Talley next year.

Because it's such a busy time of year, we are only requesting financial contributions towards breakfast sandwiches and coffee, as well as cards and notes. The PTA will take care of ordering and setting up the breakfast for staff on Friday, May 27th.

This is the second of two tables that 2nd grade is sponsoring this school year and we are asking families to contribute at least once. If you haven't yet contributed to a staff appreciation table, please consider signing up here: Glennwood Elementary School PTA: Last Day of School Breakfast (signupgenius.com)

If you have any questions, please PTA Staff Appreciation Co-Chairs contact Cristina Stevenson (cristina.stevenson@gmail.com) or Haley Stevens (haleycstevens@gmail.com) with questions. Thank you!

Second Grade Moving Forth Ceremony and Picnic

Second grade families, please save the date for the Glennwood Moving Forth Ceremony on Tuesday 5/24, at 8:30-9:15 AM.

For the picnic, we are asking for FIRST GRADE parent volunteers to help set up the Glenlake Park pavilion, so second-grade parents don't miss the ceremony. We're also asking for volunteers to walk with students to the pavilion to arrive at 10 AM. We will have pizza at 11 AM, and King of Pops will distribute pops from 11:30-12:30! Kids will depart the park at 1 PM to head back to school for dismissal. Please sign up HERE to help with the picnic.

Glennwood Community Art Experience

Building bridges: Celebrating our Common Connections and Pride in our Individuality

Parents/Caregivers: Come join your child and the Glennwood community in a collective art experience (non-messy, simple, and quick:)

When: Last day of School, right after Community Circle! (Friday, May 27th)

What: The children have been creating Charms of Individuality in art class (with their teacher, Ms. Nadine Howarth) to celebrate what makes them proud about themselves and/or their families.

Help the children form a bridge of connection out of their Individual Charms.

Where: We'll form a bridge with the children's charms along the tall, green fence behind the school building, next to the tent.

Hosted by: Glennwood PTA/Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

News from Talley Street

Over the next couple of weeks (hard to believe our LAST of the year!?!), I will be sharing a bit of information about what's to come in the next school year. Today, I want to inform you a little bit about our Specials schedule.

We are SO excited to announce that we will be having a STEM (Science-Technoloy-Engineering-Math) special for ALL our kids next year. Alicia Reno, a current stellar 4th grade teacher, will be taking the lead on this endeavor. If you have time, do some research on STEM benefits for kids. We're so excited!

We are also thrilled to tell you that ALL Talley kids will be getting more PE in 2022-2023! The state of Georgia expects children to have 90 hours of PE a year, and we have been falling short. I'm sure your kids will be able to explain all the things they LOVE about our PE program and why they're excited to be in the gym more often next year :).

In order to accommodate these changes, our Specials schedule will be altered. We will move to a 6-day rotation and alter it every 6 weeks. For example, for the 1st 6 weeks of the year, your child might have 2 PE, 2 Art, and 2 Spanish every 6 days for 6 weeks. The following 6 weeks, they would have 2 PE, 2 Music, and 2 STEM every 6 days for 6 weeks. That rotation continues through the school year. If this sounds confusing -- don't worry! Your kids will teach you all about it in August! :)

We hope you'll join in our excitement for some great changes for our kids. It's going to be a great year!

Tripod Survey

As mentioned in the Friday Follow-Up, we invite you to share your input to help us improve our efforts to make CSD a more inclusive and equitable school district. The Tripod DEI survey is designed to capture perceptions of how diversity, equity, and inclusion issues play out in school. Specifically, the survey measures perceptions of 1) school commitment to DEI, 2) school climate in general and specific to DEI, 3) integration of DEI into classroom and co-curricular activities, 4) everyday discrimination, and 5) meaningful interactions between social identity groups. Complete the survey here. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Lillie Huddleston (lhuddleston@csdecatur.net).

Extra Mile Award

Students: Do you know a teacher or CSD employee who has gone “the extra mile” this year? Nominate them for the CSD Extra Mile Award! The Extra Mile Award is an annual award that allows students to show their appreciation for the teachers or staff they feel go above and beyond what is expected of them.

Students (not parents) at any grade level can write an essay describing how their teacher (or staff member) goes the extra mile (parents can help younger children write the essay). The essays should be detailed and describe how the employee goes above and beyond.

Click here to submit a nomination. Students can also find the form any time via LaunchPad (it’s the purple icon labeled “Extra Mile Award nomination”). The deadline is May 25.

These awards will be presented at the CSD Opening Day Celebration in July.
