Trident Pānui
Week 3 - Term 2
Principal's Message
Term Two is well underway now, and despite some disruptions, students are settled in their learning and engagement with activities across the school. We have sports training, rehearsals for Kapa Haka, rehearsals for the production, and many planned EOTC events on the calendar, including a trip to Rainbows End for our senior physicists, The Auckland Writers Festival, and junior Science excursions to Waimangu for our Year Tens and a local Marine Studies day for all of our Year Nines.
EOTC
Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) is prized at Trident for the enrichment that it brings to our students. We have worked to shift the focus of EOTC to make it more accessible and equitable for all students while maintaining a wide range of opportunities available. The sad news of the caving tragedy at Whangarei Boys High School reminds us that no excursion can be "risk-free," but we have a rigorous process of risk assessment in place at Trident, which is managed from SMLT by our Deputy Principal, Ginny Bellamy, and supported by our Head of Technology, Nigel Rowland - who has extensive experience in Outdoor Education. The Board was taken through the full EOTC process in 2022, and our staff were taken through the process again last week. As a Trident whānau, we sent flowers to Whangarei Boys High School and a message of courage and support for their whole school community at this stressful and devastating time.
Excellence Assembly
It was wonderful to celebrate so many seniors last week as their progress through NCEA Levels One, Two, and Three was acknowledged. Some students are clearly well on their way to endorsement, and a continuation of their mahi and commitment will see them enjoy success. Others have tentatively started that journey, and I encourage them to make the most of the opportunity provided by their internal assessments to push themselves to Merit and Excellence and enjoy the advantages brought through this effort. A key link to achievement is attendance; the students who are experiencing personal excellence have high levels of attendance - this is a great way that whānau can support students' success.
We were delighted this week also to share in the excitement of our former student, Amy Pilkinton, as she graduated with First Class Honours in Food Technology from Otago University. Amy was an outstanding Trident student who was well respected for her work ethic; we are not surprised this commitment has seen her achieve such success.
PPTA Industrial Action
Unfortunately, at this stage, there is no resolution to the ongoing dispute between the secondary teachers' union, the PPTA, and the government, so the planned strike action continues. Next week, the following students are impacted:
Week 4: Tuesday, 16th May - Year 9s rostered home, and Wednesday, 17th May - Year 10s rostered home.
Once again, I look forward to a negotiated settlement being reached so that our teachers can return to the work they love and support the students who need them.
Ngā mihi,
Adrienne Scott-Jones

EPro8 Competition
Last week, we took three teams (one senior team and one junior team) to the EPro8 competition.
Our teams did an awesome job, with the seniors coming in 4th place and the juniors getting 4th and 6th place! The competition focused on problem solving, engineering, and innovation.
The top three teams move on to the semi-finals, but unfortunately, one of our teams just missed out by 1 point. We were very impressed with their hard work and creativity!
The challenges our teams chose to create were a rat wheel, a carwash, a storm-proof classroom, and a pendulum clock.
Hillary Challenge
Our incredible Hillary Challenge team took part in the North Island qualifiers, competing against 23 teams for a spot in the finals this October.
We are beyond thrilled to announce that our team came 4th place (provisional result), which means we are on track to qualify for the finals! This is an outstanding achievement, especially considering it was the first time our team had come together. Just imagine what they could accomplish with more training!
A big shoutout to our wonderful team members (pictured left to right): Leon Scholes, Xavier Christie, Oliver Christie, Oliver Fredricksen, Georgia Hurinui, Hannah Baxter, Maria Stoove and Isabella Wilson.
Special thanks to our dedicated coaches, Sarah Miller and Headley Meacheam.
