Shawnee's Mayor for a Day!
Congratulations to 7th grader Ashlyn B. for winning the City of Shawnee’s Mayor for a Day contest! Her submission included a vision for Shawnee in the next five years. Ashlyn’s entry was selected from among many middle-school entries citywide. Ashlyn will shadow Mayor Distler over the summer, learning about local government. Way to go, Ashlyn!
From the Counselors
Spring can be a busy and stressful time of year for kiddos! The article below offers some tips on how to support your student as he/she navigates middle school friendships.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to the counselors.
From the Nurse
No question spring has arrived- trees and flowers blooming and grass turning green. These signs of spring also may be causing allergy symptoms: runny nose, itchy eyes and throat, and sneezing. The nurse’s office does not have medication for seasonal allergies. Please give allergy medication at home, if needed to take at school please follow the medication policy by sending in original container with a note of permission to give signed by a parent. Please consider the option of giving an allergy medication that is given once a day. Most of these do not cause drowsiness that most multi- daily dose medications may cause. There are also over the counter eye drops specially formulated for allergies.
Vaccination requirements are changing for the 2019-2020 school year!
According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the new requirement states:
Meningococcal (Serogroup A,C,W,Y): Two doses required. Doses should be given at entry to 7th grade (11-12 years) and 11th grade (16-18 years).
6th grade parents: Since this is a new vaccination requirement, ALL students currently in 6th grade will need to provide proof of one dose of meningococcal vaccine to start 7th grade in the fall of 2019. The second dose will need to be administered before your student starts 11th grade. This vaccine helps protect your student against bacterial meningitis.
Your shot record might say MCV, MCV4, MCV40, MCV4P, Meneveo or Menactra. All of these will meet the new requirement.
In addition, ALL incoming 7th grade students need to have a Tdap (tetanus, dipertheria, and pertussis) booster shot.
Vaccinations can be obtained at your child’s doctor’s office, most pharmacies (like CVS and Walgreens) as well as the Johnson County Health Department.
If your student has already had these vaccines or when your student receives these vaccinations, please send the records to your nurse ASAP. You can send records to school with student, mail, e-mail or fax records to the address listed below.
To view vaccination records on file with the school:
Go to Skyward Family Access
Health Info
Change display option to “Show Vaccinations”
The Meningococcal vaccination is currently listed as non-required, due to the recent change Skyward has not been updated to list as required
The Tdap vaccination may be listed as Tdap booster
If you have any questions, please contact Theresa Koeckeritz, MTMS School Nurse.
