Morey Middle School
2014/2015 Summer Reading List
Summer Reading Book Options
We hope you enjoy the titles that we've selected for you to read for your summer reading this year. Each list supports a yearly theme that we will be revisiting throughout the year (changes, choices, and challenges). We think they offer you some exciting reading choices that will keep your reading enthusiasm going over the summer.
You will need to read TWO books from your grade level list. Don't forget your assignments too! You have some choices, so check them out below.
Remember that you can also access all summer reading material (handouts, rubrics, etc.) on Mrs. Ford's website - thefordchronicles.weebly.com (under "Summer Reading").

Summer Reading Assignments
**Annotated Notes** - Required assignment for BOTH novels that you read. - Annotated notes are a set of notes taken as you read a novel. For these assignments, you will take a total of 15 notes per book (5 as you read the beginning, 5 during the middle, and 5 at the end.) Your notes will consist of three parts:
- a chapter or page relating to the text you are highlighting
- a selection of evidence (a quote) from the text that you found relevant, moving, or thought-provoking.
- your own thinking (a connection, a question, a prediction, a response about the authors use of imagery or the author's style, etc.)
Optional Projects (You will CHOOSE ONE of the options below to complete on ONE of the books that you read this summer)
2. A Night at the Movies- You will create a presentation for a movie's premier as if you were attending it with the author. You will create several pieces, choosing 2-3 options such as: a cast list of current famous celebrities to play the main parts of the novel, a movie poster to advertise the movie, a list of concessions items that would be sold, etc. (see instructions on website and in packet)
3. Book Jacket Design - You will design a new book jacket for your novel, which will include an original illustration for the cover, book blurbs, information about characters, setting, and the author, and fictional newspaper reviews. (see rubric and instructions on website and in packet)
4. Character Facebook Project - Use the packet found on the website above to create a comprehensive Facebook profile for one of the main characters in your novel. The project includes creating a profile, writing status updates based on the chapters in your novel, and even virtual "gifts" or apps related to the novel.
