Weekly Updates from SMS- January 20
Hello Scranton Families,
This week's information includes second-semester schedules, advisory activities, mental health resources, absence clarifications, parenting supports, and a fundraiser for Brighton Robotics.
Enjoy the weekend,
Mr. Renner and Mr. Borg
Thank You
Thank you to the volunteers who help keep the traffic flowing in the morning. We will also continue with support for next week and make things easier to see where the drop-off zone is.
A few reminders:
-Pull all the way forward.
-Have your child ready to exit the car as soon as you have stopped safely.
-If you stop after the first orange barricade, your child should exit the car.
-If people are trying to cross from the parking lot, do not stop the line of cars. They will be able to cross when the whole line has stopped.
Let's keep this up and keep our morning tardies down!

Family Supports
Mental Health and Wellness
As a district we are increasing our efforts to support the Mental Health and Wellness of our students, families and the community by focusing on Relationships, Student Wellness, and Increasing a Mindset for Learning and Growth. Each week we will share a Tip/Resource.
Additional resources and information can be found on BAS Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and on our BAS Wellness & Mental Health website.
BAS Parenting Supports
The county launched a program to offer free parent coaching through the Cook Foundation. As we all navigate the daunting but amazing role of being a parent, this is a resource that we could lean on for support and/or advice. If you are at all interested, this link will remain on the district's main page through the remainder of the school year. Parent Coaching Sign-up Link

What is Advisory?
Our daily Advisory time is a fifteen-minute touchpoint scheduled after the second hour. The SMS staff will provide activities for our students that focus on fostering connections, student wellness, and growing our positive building and district culture.
Advisory is set in advance on a month-to-month basis with the activities sent out by Mr. Renner and Mr. Borg. In addition, Advisory is where we will do our daily announcements and building/district-wide community service projects, as well as structured activities such as grade checks and goal setting.

Scranton's Handbook Highlights
Absence
School attendance is the responsibility of the student and his/her parents. Punctual and regular attendance is very important. If an absence is necessary for any reason, please have your
parent/guardian call the school attendance line (810-299-3706) during the morning of your absence,
preferably before 9:00 a.m. If there has been no contact, an attempt may be made to call your parents.
To be considered for an excused absence, the parent/guardian must call the school the first day of
the absence, preferably before 9:00 a.m.; however, calls will be taken from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. If the parent/guardian fails to contact the school, we will make every effort to contact them.
When a parent has not been contacted by phone, the student, upon return to school from an
absence, must bring a note from home signed by a parent/guardian indicating the reason for the absence.
If a note is not received the next day, the absence is recorded as unexcused until a note is received.
Absences from school for purposes of family vacations are discouraged. The student will accept
responsibility for work missed during the vacation. Assignments will be provided upon a student’s return to school and such work must be completed within the number of school days absent.
Absences will be excused* for the following reasons:
1. Illness
2. Serious illness or death in the immediate family
3. Medical or dental treatment, with a doctor’s note
4. Religious holidays (a note from your Clergyman may be requested.)
*Please note that in most instances an “excused” absence still counts as a missed day of school for purposes of truancy.
Absences will not be excused for the following reasons:
1. Missing the school bus, if applicable
2. No written or verbal contact from parent/guardian to explain your absence.
3. Other reasons not specifically set forth above as excused.
